Gar like fish for a 75 gallon?

Well they are kinda neat looking fish. I guess my main issue is that whenever I have had a fish jump out or fall on the floor or somewhere that's not the tank, I literally freak out. I don't know why, but I just freeze and freak out. If there's a spider, I'll go catch it in a cup to let it outside, but a fish, I panic. They are unusual though, so they'd go with the unusual fish theme I'm going for, same with the ctenopoma. It's not like it would be extremely hard to make sure that they lid is shut or I am watching them when it is open.

And yep, it would be for sure one Senegal, and I am thinking possibly another species, or just 2 sens maybe? I LOVE the look of bichirs though, and woudn't mind having another "water dragon". I know Senegals aren't the most colorful, but they look awesome in my opinion, even though they are a duller grey color. I'm considering looking for a Retropinnis or Delhezi or Palmas as well, if I can find any others. I meant more compatibitly wise though, do bichirs fight with one another, or do they like the company of another bichir?

I am thinking about the leopard ctenopoma again though, as adults, they are pretty neat looking still. Would I want 1 or 2?

Thanks a lot Cole!

EDIT: Also, so I found some peacock eels and ropefish, the eels are 6" and the ropes around 9" would they be able to eat Nim when he is only ~3.5" and smaller than a couple of my kuhli loaches width wise? Or should I wait til he's around 4-5" before mixing them together?

I think you should be fine. My rope fish would rarely eat other fish. They have to be smaller than his mouth. Same goes for peacock eel and last time I check, peacocks had pretty small mouths. I'm not sure how leopard ctenopamo mix with each other but I'd two if you can. 2 bichirs and 2 rope fish would be great. As far as compatibility with each other I've heard many things. From a majority you'd be fine because you have a larger tank. But they do fight in small tanks. Just have plenty of cover. I'm not sure how active senegals are though? I have an ornate and he hides all the time.

huejta gar. its sort of like the "spotted" gar, just much smaller they grow to about 6-7" and are pretty easy to maintain. I've got 4 in my 120 gal along with several other fish. They don't aggitate any of the other fish. They are extremely fast, if you blink while feeding you'll miss the show. They also have a few spots in certain areas of their body. They are also pretty cheap, I've seen some @ 1.5-3" for 8 or 9 dollars at my LFS. From what I've read in all the previous posts I believe this would be the fish for you.

I agree with the hujeta/rocket gar (pike characin). I've had a couple of these before, currently have one right now that I bought at around 3" a few months ago and he's now around 6". If you don't like the look of them that's understandable, they aren't colorful or anything, but they're pretty awesome. They do love live fish (and the ones I've had were excellent hunters) but mine will also eat just about anything. Small cichlid pellets, freeze dried shrimp, sometimes he'll even eat these turtle pellets I have around here when i run out of other stuff. Right now I mostly feed him frozen krill and small pieces of fish fillets, he's a hog. Doesn't mess with any fish not small enough to eat. I have a butterfly fish too but mine is very lame, doesn't do much.

My only thing though, I am a vegan, and have a hard time feeding live fish to another fish, do they ABSOLUTELY need live fish, even tank bred/raised ones?

I've known them to eat sticks, i believe they like the floating foods.

As far as you being a vegan....if fish eat other fish in their natural habitat, it would be a good idea to feed them live fish every now and then. Althogh there are many alternatives. I was taught to think of the fish first, or it would be better not to get one at all.

Good luck.
