Gar SEIZURE Video!

No one knows >: (

very likely a nerve injury of some sort. i have seen this before in many gars (various species) over time, but usually not this frequent in occurrence. it's tough to say as this fish seems to recover every time. i have had gars hit the glass, convulse like this and die, i've had some bounce back, and i had a pair of Cubans that did this for a couple days and then seemed to go back to normal.

with your fish, especially since it is young, there may be a better chance for survival. if it is still happening, i would suggest putting it into a tank by itself or just with other gars. just use a sponge filter or something a little less disruptive than a power filter and hopefully in time (with good feeding/water Q) it will heal up and go back to normal consistently.

how long has this been happening? as long as the fish is eating and snapping out of it, i would say it's worth working with it to potentially remedy the condition. apologies for the late response, i've been very busy with work. i think it may be possible to cure the gar though--

Thanks solomon - it happened every day for about 2 weeks or so, but even during that period he seemed to be eating and swimming around fine. Luckily, seems to have calmed down now. I haven't seen it occur for around 10 days.

Just happened again today while I walked past. But this time, it stayed upside down for about half an hour, then, just like in the video, swam off like nothing ever happened.

To me it seems like some sort of neurological disorder.

He may snap out of it, but then again he may not.

As Solomon said, no reason to give up on it.

Okay thanks.

Do you use any algae gone products or something similar to kill off green water? When I was new to the hobby I had green water problems and used algae gone killing products to help. This caused something similar to whats happening to your gar to most of my fish. They would just seizure up uncontrollably. I stopped using the product and started doing wc's instead. ANd problem solved.

Nope, but the thing is, I have 2 Gars, and it has only ever occured to one of them.

Just a simple Seizure. I would not think that would be recurring. I have a Violet Goby that suffered a Seizure the first time he had any salt in his water. That was 6 months ago. He is happy and strong today! If I owned that fish I would not be worried.

Just read where you said it happened again. I'm sorry mate. I don't know what to tell ya. I wish you the best of luck.
