Can't wait to see this build! I'm looking at building a indoor pond in my garage for my turtles and some fish with them and need ideas and heating thoughts! Keep us updated!
Well I am going to insulate the hell out of this thing and see if a 500w heater will be good enough cause I am going to put a space heater in the garage anyways now I am more worried about keeping it cool in the summer.
I have 135 garage tank and had a tough time keeping warm in the winter with 3 300watt heaters. After I added alittle insulation and covered the top its much easier now and could get away with just one of those heaters. In the summer i have to blow a fan over the waters surface to keep the tank cool enough.

Yea I was looking at insulating the heck out of mine, but I then didn't know what size heater I would need. Winter is the worse for me, but summer will be completely fine.
I dont think summer is completely fine. My uncle has a 2500g pond that is completely covered, it is outside but his still hits the 90s in the summer. And we are also in NJ
as long as your garage is insulated and you dont constantly keep your door open you should do just fine. your garage should stay 10degrees warmer then out side in the winter and 10 degrees colder in the summer. also limit the amount of light you let in from out side should help stop lots of heat from getting in during the summer
I live in Colorado and have something similar for my Monster catfish, its a 480 gallon live stock feeding trough I bought new for $180 bucks. Like you my garage in unheated and only half insulated so heating was a concern of mine too. I also have a 400 gallon tank and a 240 gallon tank out there as well, I heat the tanks with a few 300-400 watt heaters and make sure the tops are sealed, I have no problems keeping those tanks above 80. The trough on the other hand is a lil different story because I have no top. Oddly enough when I made the filtration system for this trough I ended up going with a sump pump from Home Depot that I have directly in the trough itself. This pump pushes over 4000 gallons a hour and the heat it generates alone keeps my 480 gallon completely open trough over 80 degrees on the coldest of days! No heaters required and has been running non stop since last spring... I bought the sump pump for only around $120 and its awesome being a two in one. You will have to worry about humidity in the winter, Along the wall where my 8 foot trough sits started growing mold on the plywood. I quickly sprayed it all down with bleach water and it hasn't come back yet but will see.. The steam just rolls off the waters surface on cold days and this is what will cause mold or even warp wood, so keep that in mind. Just my 2 cents -
