About a year ago, my wife and I were browsing a fish shop that we frequent, looking for a nice bichir or even an eel to put in our beloved glass box of beautiful creatures, when I saw a sad little fella with big eyes all alone in a murky 10 gallon. Written on the tank in marker was "alligator gar". My wife loves her two Florida gars Gargamel and Lady Gar Gar whom we've had for years but I never really took interest. I just thought it was cute that they rubbed up against my hand when I was cleaning the tank every week. I liked my bright lively little cichlids. I was however curious about the little big eyed dork in the murky 10gal, so I researched it quick on the interwebs And after a few minutes the wheels started turning.

My wife found a family of large convicts she really liked that were recently brought to the store and worked her magic on the price. And I decided to add the little big eyed dork to the deal. On the way home we chatted about the convicts and she had only one thing to say about my new fascination. "You know we're going to need an indoor pool now, right." I said "I was thinking more along the lines of a water basement like that guy in Canada." She laughed and said that would be cool, shes awesome like that.

I set up an old 29 gallon in my office with a cycled sponge I keep just in case and put the little dork in there.

I wanted to think of a cool name for him but all I could come up with is Garp.

Now he's 22" and eats whatever we catch out of the lake that will fit in his mouth. Sometimes two at once.

I keep him in a 210 right now and am looking for a larger display tank. i have a giant potable 4 foot cube for him in case I can't find the next tank in time for his growth. Which will probably happen next month.

This thread is to document the life of my friend Garp. Soon I will post pictures and things up for him. Feel free to comment as you please but keep it reasonably civil. I'm a little put off by many of the posts in this section. If this thread turns negative or goes off topic I will simply leave it.

Cheers!!

Nice to have you on the board.

Use to have a couple gators just shy of 3'. Have a little guy around 6" right now that I'm growing up.

Would love to see picks of your gator.

My gars are 7" 13" and 15" now and I'm planning to build a plywood tank for them. 12ft long 5ft wide and 3 ft deep.

Thanks for the interest! That's about the size I want eventually. Maybe wider though so he can turn easily. He always looks so happy haha. Comes over to wherever i am. Rubs against me when I'm working in the tank. He's a lot more social than I thought they could be.

Biggest meal yet! Got a 9 inch trout this morning and Garp got it down in 3 gulps. I'll have to get a picture next time. Didn't think to snap a picture until all that was left to see was the tail
