GATF Arrived

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
He was skinny but I dont think he looked emaciated like I have seen some that have been starved. I did not ask Wes if he treated, but I trust him and his reputation, and I think it would be insulting to accuse him of sending a fish with parasites. For all I know the barbs I picked up introduced something to the tank.

If I want to treat the tank just to be safe for future inhabitants, should I just use prazipro or is there something else I should also apply?
kno4te kno4te knows about meds, this is where he picks up my slack. And it wouldn't be insulting wes, as I said accidents happen. And that is another possibility as well.

Yup. Wes and I have already spoken about the scenario and I am more than happy to do future business with him. Its impossible to say what the cause of death is with 100% certainly, but I think the death is more likely to stress/starvation that parasite and me not appreciating how sensitive these guys are at small sizes.

Sorry for your loss. I'd be pissed too.
Personally, I believe the cause of death to be stress and starvation. I got new 4-inch GATF last week in 160g and she's been eating well since the 2nd day until I put powerhead into the pond. She seems VERY stressed by it, even all the mates and 6-inch Vittatus which already settled in so I need to removed it after only 2 days.

IMO GATF this young should be kept in calmed water without too much of a current and keeping well-fed until they reached 7-inch.

Sorry about your loss. I also don't think they need high flow and feel it actually causes problems for them. Grab another atf and try it again.

Trying to decide what to do. I love the idea but i travel for work, try to take 2 week vacations and I have a 2nd kid on the way. With my solitary piranhas I could go with a couple weeks of not feeding or cleaning. With a gatf needing more attention and a community needing daily feeding, I think doing a solitary aimara is better frankly. I was all about trying a gatf/aimara community tank but I just don't think i have the patience or time. I will probably go Aimara but trying to get my wife on board as she's upset with me :)

I've got similar issue like you before so I would say pick or keep your Piranha cause it can withstand major water parameter for awhile while you're away from home, while with ATF thing easy when wrong even with 5~10 mins power out, or your kids running around and tap on your glass tank and spooked it = you have a dead ATF :P My 17" GAFT ended up dead just like that when a kid sudden tapped the glass (all kid pretty has same behave with any fish tank LOL) and the GATF just dash like a rocket to the tank wall then go up hit the locked top cover...floating around for few mins and its gone! What can I do to the kid? They were laughing cause it look really fun to them without knowing they just killed the fish....

Agreed. With the Aimara I don't have these issues either. I'll figure something out soon. Down the road I'll consider coming back to atf.

Damn bro, that's a bummer. ATF in general are quite sensitive and weak until they are about a foot long. I've lost many gatf/vatf at sub 12".. when they get mature though, they are much stronger and hardier. My 20"+ gatf got stung by my BD stingray but recovered... had me super worried.. in general, I wouldn't starve juvenile fish as well.. they need to have energy and be plump and healthy before undergoing food training.

Agreed. I over estimated how sensitive a small one is. I will say that once I got the gatf the excitement wore of and realization that it will require more attention, care, and potentially mixing with aimara was unlikely. I ended up wishing I had just gotten an aimara instead, which is why I got another aimara. I do think I will come back to trying a gatf again at some point, but right now probably is not the best time.
