General saltwater Questions?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well, maybe some folks like ugly algae all over their tanks!

I think if you had a well established fuge or ats and a properly sized skimmer, most tap water sources wouldnt give you much trouble. Well water at 400 ppm sounds pretty heavily saturated, but it has also been my experience that well water is very hard water, normally high in minerals.

isnt everything you need is already in the salt mix?

indeed it is, but its still run through a filter which adds/takes things to make it safe to drink.

regular salt mix just has the basics like calcium mag and alk

but reef crystals have more included vitamins and what not to help in growth in corals and anemones.

most people who keep reef tanks never use Tap water......
i never would

We are not going down this road again. If most people jumped off a bridge, would you?

I sure as hell wouldnt.

Facts are facts. Dont fix what isnt broke: my tank is doing great, has been for 8 years.

The less you tinker with things, the better: My water is more complete than yours, PLUS testing shows that there is NOTHING detrimental to the keeping of invertebrates or fish in my water.

Not spending money is a good thing :D, and Im not spending any money on something I dont need.

MOST people live in urban areas that probably have treated water, or impure wells...if testing shows that you need it, go for it, but really...everyone should test. No reason to be doing ro/di filtration if you dont need it. You cant argue with that dude. You just cant.

You will still need a way to test for TDS, and you will need to maintain your RO filter. Some of the membranes on them do not last very long depending on the capacity of the system and the quality of the membrane.

Its an unnecessary expense if water testing shows you its a non-issue.

To FLESHY, sumping would only be possible if i can get the sump on the bottom my aquarium stand. I also have a 20 gallon long that fits on the bottom of stand if i can use it for a DIY sump if thats cheaper.

My store gets real Live sand i know this because it has real salt water in the bag. It 25.00 for a 20 pound bag.

Nothing is live about sand in a bag. To keep bacteria alive, it needs food & O2, neither which is supplied to it, laying on a shelf in an enclosed bag for God knows how long.

+1...unless you see it come out of a tank...or a box that was sent straight from the ocean...I just wouldnt do it.
