Crushed coral is like anything else with saltwater. Everyone says no, but its totally possible to use it if you put in the maintenace required. Its the same thing with canister filters. I use them with no problems while people say its impossilbe and a terrible idea. It all comes down to how much work you are willing to do.

It is probably worth spending extra for the right substrate though, just dont be turned away by what is commonly accepted. Pufferpunk is right though, a good skimmer is worth its weight in gold.

Everyone said its doable, but such a pain in the ass keeping it clean. Besides crushed coral is so ugly in marine tanks. I also use canisters on my marine tanks, but they are not as preferred as my sumps.

I'm sorry RATEDSUPERFAN but reading through this thread gives me the impression that you saw a saltwater fish and though cool i want that, and now you're trying to get that fish and don't really have an interest/care in the hobby. This is just my opinion though. It seems you don't want to take the time and effort to invest into something that's going to be nearly maintenance free and last you a long time.

If you want to be able to enjoy this and have healthy fish and tank I would suggest investing a good chunk of money into a really good protein skimmer. The protein skimmer is essentially the heart of your system. Although only removing about 30% of the organic waste its getting to it first before it starts to really break down and the beneficial bacteria in your aquarium gets to it. I highly suggest running a refugium because again this is going to help remove a lot of the organic waste. Along with frequent water changes using RO/DI water and good salt mix for a FOWLR system you should have next to no problems.

.

I did not walk in a store and saw saw a saltwater fish and though cool i want that, and yes I have an interest in the hobby. It's just that some of these post confuse me and I have a budget of between $300 and $400 for set up cost and that excludes cost of the fish.

Ok well my apologies, but that 300-400 is going to be the price of live rock alone. i suggest saving up and buying your equipment piece by piece. a FOWLR set up for a 75g tank is going to be around 1400-2000.

Skimmer, Lights, Live Rock, "Live" Sand, and if you really care about your water quality investing in an RO/DI unit is a must imo and then if you don't have enough pressure in your water lines (say its an older house on well water) you may have to buy a booster pump.

I set up my 360 gallon tank for 600$

Filtration, plumbing, rocks and sand.

I got good deals though, I didn't skimp and buy crushed coral.

PSI is only required to be about 35+, genrally you should have no problem getting that. tho as gprime said a booster pump may be required. you Could buy RO/DI water from a local pet store....but buy a TDS meter to test it!

you could buy some 'dead' rock and some live rock to seed the dead rock.

in a 75 gallon system all Live rock will be about
80lbs of Rock X $8.0 a lb = ~$640.00........

if you do ~25% dead or dry and ~75% live
~20 lbs dead rock (or dry rock) = ~$119.00
~55 lbs of live rock @ $8 a LB = ~$440.00
----------------------------
Total= ~$559.00

you can get a very nice RODI system from bulk reef supply with all fittings and everything for arouns $200. i love my BRS system!
(the one i got) <- click

as for the
FOWLR set up for a 75g tank is going to be around 1400-2000

i have a 29 gallon biocube HQI with sump/fuge. i have spent over $3500 easily (with equiptment alone)........so setting up a S/w tank can get expsnive. but its worth it!

I think i will get the crushed coral for $25, 200 gallons worth a salt for $50 and maybe some sand too. Anyone know any where to get a cheap skimmer for a 75 because im still going to use my emperor 400 filter with it.

buying a CHEAP skimmer is like having a girlfriend thats really a guy.......its really pointless. spend your money on something that is worth the money. something that will preform well.
