Gental Giants

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sorry not great pics. This is one of my Rotkeils. He's not full grown I've had him since he was about 2" he's now maybe 5" give or take. I happen to have ornery sevs, though it could be because they're all male. 3 rotties in 3 different tanks because they would NOT get along. Though each of them gets along fine with a super red.

 I just realized it looks like he's trying to talk to the uaru ferns next door.

I disagree with the general "vieja" comment. Most viejas can be just as aggressive as midas, red devil etc. Synspilum do tend to be on the more peaceful side but as stated they can hold their own. I've had several over the years and none were ever an aggression problem. I would also say in my limited experience with them that heterospilus and regani were fairly peaceful as well. However most others can be downright ruthless.

I currently have a 3-4" blackbelt that has been moved around a couple of times because he goes after cichlids much larger than him. Zonatus, fenestratus and bifasciatus can also be highly aggressive.

When I think of 'gentle giants' I tend to think of Bocourti, pearsei, severums, chocolate, uaru, severums, nicaraguense and some geophagus.

uaru! thats another one ive seen in my fish book. there a two species listed, one is called Uaru and the other is Long Finned Waroo. though plain looking, i liked them a lot. are they similar to sev's?

also your rotkiel is pretty. im sure hes going to look awesome when he gets bigger Nyvar!

Chocolates would be you best bet, Id think.
My Syn is aggro in my 180, and the Nic is no better.
Chocolates and severums are both good looking and a nice temperament.

well both are readily available to me. green sev's i can get no problem, but how long till you can tell them apart male and female? also, chocolates have an interesting color pattern. i guess ill flip a coin. lol.

i was thinking for a dither fish of buying a small group of 5 or 6 rose-lined torpedo barbs. any suggestions if you dont advise this?

FYI
75g to 125g isn't worth the upgrade dollars...

I'd make sure to stock the 75g with the appropriate size and amount of fish that can be homed there for life.

Things will always delay a tank purchase, unlike growing fish.

When you have the money and space for an upgrade, I'd suggest adding another tank, and stock it with appropriate size and amount as well...;)

Mine are F1 uaru fernandezyepezi which are difficult to find, and a lot of work, but they're also my "holy grail" fish.

The other type are uaru amphiacanthoides which are easier to find, from what I hear easier to keep.

The overall body shape is similar to a sev, but they're fairly plain looking (I think the ferns are sexy as hell, but someone's gotta love the stepchild) but they also like being in a group so probably aren't the fish you're looking for.

You can easily put a pleco in now. They grow slow enough that it won't out grow the 75 for at least 2 years. They are armor plated so even if your fish take a few pokes at them.... they aren't hurt and the fish eventually realize that poking them doesn't accomplish much and stop.
For a bargain and to add to the adventure, make it your mission to find one for free off of Craig's list. You can often find a tank for sale that includes all the fish. (These tanks are the hardest to sell.) I have contacted many of those add posters and gotten a LOT of free fish that way.
