Frank, this name does not exist.ye, i just did some digging, they were definitely NOT G. satanoperca
yea, this is what i found on Google the other night after i came home from the LFS.....i thought the same thing.....Satanoperca isn't a species, it's a genus, so why do these wacky weirdo LFS have it labelled as G. satanoperca???? They always tell me I'm "the one who knows cichlids, don't ask them" but now I'm really starting to agree w/ them. This was a Ma-and-Pa store, believe it or notFrank, this name does not exist.
Satanoperca translates to Satan's perch. They are indeed eartheaters but are not part of the altifrons complex.
The name also prefixes the descriptions and is a whole genus not one species. for example,
Satanoperca pappaterra
Satanoperca deamon
Satanoperca jurupari
And so on.
Does an Altifrons or a Surinamensis cost more than $10 at 2"?If you have a good eye for cichlids, misnamed fish can work in your favour and you can snap up a bargain.
I once bought satanoperca pappaterra labeled as jurupari. They cost me around £5.00 each.
Specialist sellers would normally charge a lot more than that for pappaterra.
Ignorance can be bliss.
Earth-eaters generally kept better in pairs or just one is ok too?Altifrons are quite cheap,Surinamensis is quite a rare fish so they would carry a high price tag.
I have never seen true surinamensis being sold,
Only seen fish labeled as them, normally altifrons.
That sounds about right for a 2" fish depending on f status or catch location.
So i should get mate for them, ok.....gotta work something out here. They tend to live in groups in the wild especially while young.Pairs break off on their own to spawn.
Personally I don't like to keep them alone, prefer same species groups or established adult pairs.
