well its not like getting caught with drugs or hurting someone.

No, it's worse!

The devastation that an accidentally introduced species can have on an ecosystem is worse than any drug offense... it can decimate local species and cost an unimaginable amount of money.

And if someone is perpetuating the sales of an endangered species, they are potentially contributing to the demise of that species.

I'm all for it... jail time, fines, whatever.

i dont see why they are so strict on bringing asian arrows into america
i wouldnt mind catching a few in a local pond
=)

This also applies to those fish you never even suspected of being illegal/endangered. I would bet quite a lot of us on here hold an illegal/endangered and have no clue. These rules would apply to use as well.

I strongly believe there needs to be a separation of KEEPING and intending on SELLING in this thread and in our hobby as well.
Once again, I have read only issues related to importing/exporting, possession for intention of selling or moving. I have not really read anything about having an Asian Aro in your tank you can prove you bought 2 years ago.
No one is killing your fish. I think there is just as much here say and urban legend involved as there is facts.

since asian aros are endangered they dont kill them.

since asian aro keeping is a violation of federal law ( the lacey act) the penalties should be the same in every state

there are two sets of laws in the USA.

federal laws same for everyone

state laws based on each state's view of themselves

asian aros are illegal, as the are still considered endangered. this is true in all 50 states. having one is a violation of federal law without proper permits as is selling one

in calif.........piranha are illegal as they are considered an invasive species here..other states dont have the same view or weather.

handy that the asian aros are legal in canada ;)

Ok to put everybodys mind to rest and so that somebody reading this with no idea doesnt get confused, THEY DO NOT KILL YOUR ANIMAL!!! They bring them to any public aquarium (the Shedd Aquarium has tons of Asian Aros) or they are given to a well known and reputable keeper. THere was a guy that wrote an article for TFH who got some Asian Aros that were imported into the states.

The punishments for Asian Aros:

$250,000 fine, 5 years in jail per charge(fish)

it is very good to hear that they are not killing fish on the endangered species list
