Dear Bill,

Thank you for your inquiry regarding the Service's procedures involving seized live wildlife. Our mission is, working with others, to conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife, and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people.

Regulations found in 50 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Part 12 authorize the Service to take certain actions with respect to seized wildlife which has been forfeited or abandoned. Depending on the situation, the Service may return endangered species to the wild in their country of origin, transfer the animal to another government agency for official use or donate the animal to an appropriate scientific or educational institution. (See 50 CFR 12.30 to 12.39) In rare circumstances a seized animal may be destroyed if there is a significant disease or safety risk to humans or animal populations.

You also inquired about the process the Service uses to determine what species are proposed for listing under the Endangered Species Act. For more information on this topic please visit the following link: http://www.fws.gov/endangered/bulletin/99/11-12/6-9.pdf

You can find the Endangered Species Act, 16 USC 1538 and 50 CFR Part 12 at http://www.gpoaccess.gov.

Thank you for your interest in our regulations that help protect fish, wildlife, and plants and their habitats. Please feel free to respond to this message with any further inquiries that you may have regarding this matter.

There you go. It's very rare to release something back since there are other hoops you have to jump through to clear it of any possilbe introduction of captive diseases.

no, i didn't think u were making it up you had the most informative info on this thread about what happens to these animals and the e-mail i got just happened to back your info basically to the T. so i just threw that one in there as a kinda "hey this guy know his stuff." No offence was meant if u took it thas way

I don't know much on this subject but i do know that blue channel catfish just got banned in MICHIGAN.I don't know why but i had 1 in with my giant gourami.my lfs told me not to get rid of it because they can no longer buy/sale or even have 1 in the store.sadly he died a few months ago. RIP 1 OF THE SADDEST DAY'S in my life.I do have 1 video of him so as he will be missed i can still see him when ever i want

I like the endangered species act. Isn't it better to miss out on keeping a few species than to see their numbers depleted and perhaps sold to ignorant people? I love arrowanas, but honestly, I'd rather have them listed under CITIES if they're in any danger.
There should be incentives, I think, for captive breeding endangered fish.

incentives are a good thought but then u have to think of the ppl who could breed them in there own home (lots of ppl here have the tank space) then give those ppl incentives to release them back to the wild then the populaion would boom and its just odd to me that the US is one of the only countries that will not allow you to own a asain
