I don't know how you can compare the two since his "bucket" is more or less a QT? I dunno, I just don't see anything wrong in him trying to give it the best care possible to keep it alive in case he can actually have it in a tank.

An octopus is very difficult to keep, its not something you do in a bucket. They are very intelligent and escape artists, they dont live very long and they stress out easily. Anyone who had a serious and humane interest in keeping an octopus would have done the research and set up a proper tank ahead of time. This guy swilled some beer and decided to keep a pet octopus in a bucket.

Must not be too hard if its still alive after living in a bucket for the about 2 weeks now. Whats the difference between keeping a fish in a bucket to keeping one in a rubbermaid tub? Nothing at all its the same thing. How is it that on this site there is more Flaming and BS than actual advise/ help?

And no care for the creatures well being? Seriously? Millions of these things are killed every years for food and to be used as bait. If it doesnt survive. Which it has been doin in a BUCKET. Then why let it go to waste? Use the thing as bait.

To the OP. Thats a nice find you got there. Always thought it would be cool to have one but i really dont want to go to the darkside haha. Best of luck in keepin this guy. And if not hope you catch a big one.:D

Oh well I guess that proves theyre beyond easy to keep, what was I thinking when I researched keeping an octopus? I should have just filled a bucket with seawater and gone at it. :shakehead

You cant be serious.

I think you're being a little too judgmental. At least he didn't throw it in an uncycled 10 gallon with tap water and salt and hope for the best.

Good point, and since no one will be changing anyone's mind anytime soon, I propose to resolve this issue in an adult, professional manner.

JD, I will pay you the cost of a bucket of shiners and six pack of the beer of your choice, natural light or pabst blue ribbon if you will take the octopus back and release him where you found him.

Well i guess we learn something new every day.

And yeah im serious whats the difference? Besides size? And IMHO there is not a single person in this work (including Aquariums) that can keep fish in their ideal environment. Not saying we dont try our best. But its not the wild where they should belong. We all have fish that come from the largest rivers and bodies of water in the world. And say 1000 gallons is fine. But in all reality its not im sure if ur fish could talk theyed rather be in the wild than be confined in a tank. All in all the largest tanks anyone has is just there own personal preference.

SIZE! Are you telling me living in a house and in a prison cell are the same thing?

To the guys that are supporting me, thanks!

Oscar, I will take you up on that. A 12 pack of PBR and a couple dozen shrimp and I will release him, I doubt youll follow through though.

To the guys that are interested, I went out catching food for him today (shrimp) and caught some really cool by catch including two pistol shrimp, several pipe fish, arrow crabs, small flounder, pin fish, tiny little BRIGHT emerald green shrimp which were just cool, and several small fish I couldnt ID.
