Only in this year have anyone attempted to actually ID any cichla under 7'' so it's a toss of the dice. But if there Ocel's have rings around them then Orino. If there tail line has a deep yellow outline then there most likely Mono. And Occelaris is having neither of the above descriptions. Try and get a real close picture on one of them full body shot and we can see if we can Id them.

I strongly agree with this. People just need to let their cichla grow until they are certain of an ID. I thought I had ocells until they reached 7" and then they changed colour and pattern and are actually mono's. Just have patience, your going to love watching these grow and develop their markings and colours.

cichla are looking good.. nice leaves ;) do you know the benefits?
Of course I know the benefits! The only real benefit is the release of tannic acid, lowering your pH. There are other potential benefits though, slight softening of the water as well as heavy metal removal. To get these two other benefits you would need to remove the leaves before they decomposed, as they release these compounds as they do.

At this point, I'm just happy they are Cichla, we'll see in the months to come what they are.

Well, they are doing awesome. Their growth has slowed slightly, maybe only 1/8" so far this week. The largest is nearing 4", with the others close behind. Funny thing is the largest isn't the dominant fish, the third largest is. The spotting I had seen originally in the soft dorsal is gone. They are developing a beautiful yellow coloration, and I think I see a light ring around the body spots as well as the caudal stripe. I took about one hundreds pictures, got three decent ones.

The dominant bass.

Sweet. I am glad there doing good. Yea the runt is sometimes the biggest beast of them all. My male Mono is the biggest instigator in the tank. LOL. But the Smallest of the four largest and my Pinima are way bigger then him but he still start's crap with them every night I turn on the light's.
