Yeah that does look like a cross between the two. Either that or it's still a baby and the fins aren't grown in all the way and it's just a crowntail.

and freshwater Bettas http://www.itis.usda.gov/servlet/SingleRpt/SingleRpt?search_topic=TSN&search_value=172611 both belong to the order Perciformes (Perch) which explains the resemblance. Unfortunately, beyond that they are not related at all. It would be very cool if they could breed together. I supposed the offspring would have to be kept in brackish water.
