GIANT gouramis

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I was wondering whether I should move the 2 er... RTGGs to the small tank... I worry that they won't eat in the big tank... the pacu and the cats might hog all the food... thing is, the small tank already contains 4 gouramis... among which, 3 males... there might be aggression... unless I move these into the big tank...

Can't decide what to do... I'll wait for your input... :)

Substrate in:cool-1: Pictures later, the pleco won't come out from underneath the filter so can't quite finish it.
Updates on this, please :)

It seems that they are overcoming their shyness a bit... I've given them some freeze-dried bloodworms and they are eating! :D And they are also nibbling the lettuce that was meant for the pacu! :)

I guess they will be staying in the big tank then. :)

I tried to take some more pictures but they dash behind the filter when they see me coming near... as you can see, the red in the fins is quite apparent...

They are getting bolder... guess it must be the bloodworm... they are now cruising all over the length of the tank now, though just under the surface... and they seem to quarrel from time to time...

The pictures are not getting any better but...

Much better photos, and I'm now a 100% sure that they are RTGG's and though they appear to be females I'm based om coloration. Looking at the direction the lips are pinched/turned in the bottom 2 of post #1026 I would say that this fish maybe be a male. Also this fish appears to have a little more red throughout it's body. Only time will tell for sure what's what but I believe you have a male and a female RTGG on your hands.

One of them (not sure which one in the photos) has a deformed jaw on one side... we need to take that into consideration... I thought they were both females based upon the rounded dorsal fins...

Like you said, only time will tell. :)

Having spent some time looking at my two gouramis hiding behind the filter and looking at the picture of a baby RTGG (Osphronemus laticlavius), I tend to agree with brother Tequila here... most probably, I've got 2 females RTGGs (both have round dorsal fins and show hints of red in the caudal fins).
Me and Tequila never agree on much so it means nothing;)

I'd move them, even after the updates about them feeding etc. they are not in the best condition so a separate tank would leave them with no potential aggression issues and you could treat them on their own and grow them out a bit.

Ok then we are all agreed that they are ggs, purchased for the cost of a small gourami?
Sexing has not been fully decided but one male and one female is the general opinion.
Tequila = 100% rtgg
Lou = coming round to the 100% rtgg
Me = after the other comments 80% exodon

Am I the only one who is not seeing the red in the right places on the photos? Lou, can you get a flashed shot close up of the tail?
Tequila can comment much better than me on the Red tail business as he has 4 that he has raised.

I would advise against moving them to a seperate tank, RTGG's seem to beat on each other even when small. My 2 males when approx 4 inches battled until one had ripped the dorsel fin of the other to shreads. Requiring months in a hospital tank. The remaining females in there holding tank back at the LFS beat on each other until, either they where sold or died. My smallest female was the last remaining RTGG at the place. She still keeps somewhat to herself on one side of the tank most of the time.

depending on your tanks temp I would feed them like 3~5 times per day. I feed mine in the beggining live blackworms, bloodworms, then mealworms and then switched over to earthworms, superworms, crickets. and a few feeders that where really ment for the Aro that used to be in with them. While I didn't at first offer mine veggies they fed on the remaining aquarium plants in the tank.

Ok, I've just moved them to the gourami tank... let's hope the males won't be aggressive. If they are, it's going to be hell to move them - the wood provides too many hiding place so I'd have to tear everything down...

I guess so. :) To think that I was jealous of Piggy who got that same luck! ;)

Well, the red in the fins is what I'm basing myself upon... otherwise I would have agreed with you regarding them being of the exodon type...

Let's hope everything goes fine. :) I have to admit that I am nervous... they were not that healthy to start with (battered, deformed jaw, milky eye...)... anyway, we'll see ;)
