Hi all,

thanks for your interest...re illegality, they have become established in several countries, as far from home range as Japan, and a real concern in those habitats; even more so than slider, they are release as they grow, so many countries are clamping down. here in NY they are illegal to keep as are all native herps, but as mentioned in the article they can be hunted, and this may soon be easier to do, if traps are lega;lized!

We had alot of fun catching snappers when we were teenagers. We deff caught some that were in the 50-75 lb range. The trick is go out right when the sun is going down and raw bacon as bait

I've seen a quite big snapper in a small fishing trip in a local river. The river is very shallow with lots of garbage. My dad was washing his hands when A giant snapper head popped out of a rocky hole. The snapper had to be at leat 2 feet in diameter. It sucked that the snapper lived in such a crappy environment. I saw it eat a syrofoam cup.

I grew up spending weekends at the lake house and fishing near the marshes... Seen some scarily big snappers before. Heads the size of a football and easily couple feet across. Add in they look huge and scary in water and have a nasty habit of sunning on lawns and smell horrible, I can see why people want them gone. True story: wading through about 2' of water picking blueberries I saw a train of ducklings following their mom and while I was watching one got picked off by a snapper. This is one animal I don't think is over feared, I warned a lady who was getting close to touching one next to the road, showed her its power when I got a branch within 6" of his head and wham... Toothpicks for everyone.

Biggest I have seen in the Wild was only around 40 Pounds, but I do know a Keeper with one that is easily 80 or so pounds. THe thing that impresses me the must about them is how rapidly they grow. I bought two hatchlings from a Repticon back in 2011 that are now 8 inches long and 12 inches respectfully and just massive, while in my experience other species take years to get decent size on them.
