Give fancy Goldfish a chance. Seriously.

I had a courting pair of ryukins about the size of baseballs in a 55g and the upkeep was just too much. I returned them before they spawned. The water changes required were just outrageous, even with high-quality food.

Someday I'll set up a 60 gallon for a veiltail or a phoenix. They are hypnotic.

I have a coldwater tank with dojo loaches, feeders, a fantail and a black moor.

Unfortunately the black moor has been floating uncontrollably since last November. After feeding medicated goldfish food and switching his diet to Hikari Lionhead there has been no progress.

Then I read in one of Axelrod's books that this isn't unusual and is very rarely fixed. It is depressing to see and I feel terrible whenever I look at him :(

Why? Does he look unhappy? And stop trying to create superbugs. Antibiotics are ruining our hobby by making stronger bacteria. This non-stop parade of medicated food is way more dangerous than a fish that floats.

I assume you already tried the peas and epsom salt?

I got into keeping goldfish because my wife kept rescuing the cute feeders. I now have several including a 9" fancy tail. It started out gold and is now white. Several others have changed color. Anyone know why? Ive had gold to white, black to gold and black to white. One of my black to whites is now getting some gold. I have to get rid of most of these guys but after my move I plan on getting more. I love the big "fro" the lionheads get.

Ive got a gold fish that is perpetually at the top as well. None of the others are affected so Im guessing its not anything im doing. I occassionally aspirate him with a hypodermic but he ends up back there in a week or so. Everything seems temporary fix so im assuming its a genetic thing.

I love my Fancy Goldfish! :headbang2

I also love my monster catfish and my Eartheaters, but they don't have the personality of the Goldies.

Fantastic picture!!!

I have a black moor that is 10 years old in a 65 hex. This guy has more personality than an oscar. He is currently 9 inches also in tank is a 7 inch comet that is 4 years old. Hey I have kept everything from guppies to a giant snakehead when they were legal and goldies are always at the top of my list. My large Vieja Argentae loves to stare at the black moor from another tank.
