Give fancy Goldfish a chance. Seriously.

I had a Goldfish tank. It was nice, but they died during a move:( Been wanting to start one again, but ended up with a community tank...wish I went with a GoldFish tank instead now. That tank now house some Dats, Polys, and a Knife. Hopefully, when they grow, I can move them to the big tank, and have a free tank to start one again. In the meantime, my friend has one and it's always nice to see how active they are.

I have two *Ryukins(sp?) @ 5" now living in my pond with koi. These guys are not built to eat like koi's are. I have to make sure they get some pellts since their so slow.:grinno:

I was at my lfs years ago, they had just got a load of large fancy goldfish in. one had such long fins it couldn't swim well and just sat on the bottom. They were like 'we can't have a fish sitting around looking sick', so they gave her to me as a feeder. I took her but never intended to use her as a feeder, she got her own tank. I called her fin.

I had goldfish before and they were awsome. I really like goldfish. They just bobble around happy. They always seem to be happy.

My "common" goldfish were won at a school fair and were 1"-2" at the time. Now they are 8" and growing and are some of my favorite fish.
I put them in a 60g (there are 5) and this tank has afforded a change in them for the better. They swimm around and "play" in the bubble columns. I make this point because I feel a much larger tank is in order as I know these fish have the potential to get even larger.
A good thing that is important to remember for anyone wanting to keep goldfish is that they are cold water fish and thrive in water around 75ºF or cooler. They also thrive in very oxygen rich water so a sump filter set up as a trickle filter will not only allow for a larger bio-media capacity, but also the aeration of the water will keep these fish very vibrant.
Just my 2¢

i first started with a goldfish. nobody in my family thought it ws going to get big except my dad who was the "expert " at the time. he was addicted way befor me and while i grew up he shut down his 75 gal and gave me his old 20 to put the goldfish in. they grew that then one day he finally gave me the 75 it was one of the proudest moments of my life. those goldfish grew to like 16 inches but they wernt facy

that was touching. started out with gold fish then my favorite one choked on a rock and died. my other ones died two an it ended there.

i think they are great. i would like to try a specialized tank for some fancies at some point down the line.

I kept goldfish only twice.. So here's the story

1) like 2 years back.. my granma bought 3 goldfish for me, my bro and my sis and a 1foot tank for them... Well they died 3 days later because of chlorinated water, water level was very low, the tank was outdoors, the goldfishes died eveytime it rained due to temperature change.. After that I vow not to keep goldfish again

2) After 2 years and I know alot more about fishkeeping I tried again... Well this time it aint that bad I got 3 surviving for a few days in a pail. One died of suspected ammonia poisoning( bleeding gills) The others died because the air output tube wasnt in the water...

I got into keeping goldfish because my wife kept rescuing the cute feeders. I now have several including a 9" fancy tail. It started out gold and is now white. Several others have changed color. Anyone know why? Ive had gold to white, black to gold and black to white. One of my black to whites is now getting some gold. I have to get rid of most of these guys but after my move I plan on getting more. I love the big "fro" the lionheads get.
I've got 3 10cm, really friendly, eat from your hand fantails.
Would like to know why they change colour to.?
I got into keeping them cause my kids were given some and are to little to do much more than feed them.
Only one of them has changed colour and stayed that way. The orange and white has gradually turned completely orange the other 2 are the same gold they've always been.
I was thinking it was a kind of majority rules thing so the other 2 wouldn't pick on it.
Recently the one that changed colour turned out to be the only male in the tank. It's the 1st time they've bred so I'm wondering if that's why.
