Give fancy Goldfish a chance. Seriously.

One of the six goldfish I was using to cycle my 180 (seeded media so it was more of a test than anything) made it. I guess he was the only one who could swim from the Jag. He was pretty beat up and couldn't swim very fast so I put him in a ten gallon by himself with a fresh water change. Tomorrow I will give him a does of melafix and aquarium salt and some bloodworms. I'm really hoping he gets better because I am kind of attached to him now.

I have kept tropicals for years but after recently working at a LFS I became intrigued with goldies. I now have Ruyunkins in my pond and Orandas in a 55 gal. tank.

I have to say, I am really digging these fish!

fancy goldfish are awesome! one day I'll set up a tank for them.

I have always had a soft spot for fancy goldfish. It gets harder and harder every year to find really nice goldies. The stuff some stores are passing off as fancy goldfish lack definition and style. I haven't been able to find a nice ryukin in a very long time, all of them now seem to have shorter tails and dorsal fins that don't stand upright and the quality of pearl-scales have also diminished greatly over the years. Now I'm talking about juvenile fish about a 1" long body length. I guess breeding high quality goldies isn't as high a priority as it use to be or just isn't economical any more. I grow out most of my fancies out in the pond these days. The tanning and live food tends to bring out the best colors.

I love Orandas. I sold my first two to make room to re-do the tank for Discus. The discus were somewhat boring and not much personality. : ( I sold the discus and was recently given an beautiful calico Oranda and a huge fantail. I would love to get a black Oranda now but they are hard to find in my area. I also have 4 other tanks, one with gorgeous guppies, a 100 gal with balloon mollies and albino bushynose plecos, one tank with dwarf south american cichlids, and another waiting to find some inhabitants. I love the personality and expression of the orandas. They always make me smile.

Don't know why but I can't think of them as cute. :WHOA:

All the excess growths and weird shapes just make me think of tumors or deformities. Creepy. :nilly:

same... i think large koi are really cool but the goldfish with the tumor looking fro-type growth things and the bug eyed ones are just not my thing

Such pretty fishies! Here fishy fishy!:hearts:

I used to keep fancy gold fish years ago but now feel that they are too inbred or something. A lot of them seem to have trouble swimming with their long fins and odd body shape. I do think the black moor is charming though..
