Give me the low down! DIY masters chime in!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
2 years later and it still feels like a work in progress. I added 2 overhead sumps for pothos, filter socks, and extra media. Can't afford an Ultima filter so I bought a used Hayward and added some screen and filled with Ultima media. Might not be as effective but I am very happy with it. And also finally added a drip system to the tanks. Not real pretty but gets the job done.View attachment 1161046 View attachment 1161050 View attachment 1161051 View attachment 1161052

Pretty is in the eye of the beholder. I like.
....that Hayward is impressive and I really like the filters for the drip. How long do youget between filter change outs?
I really am gravitating towards a drip...

Showing the girlfriend how to build and she is doing very well she picked how we did everything and I helped her by walking her threw every step. I know it is excessive for a 35g over a 30g but practice makes perfect and all the material is laying around. She is doing better then I did my first few times!

I don't think I understand the corners.....are they overflows? Why open at the bottom?
It looks clean. Is the whole tank a complete ground up build? Very nice.

Yes they are overflows there is a piece of glass under the angel pieces which seals the box it will be drilled for a half inch bulkhead. Plan is to use 1.5 inch end caps to drop the overflow tube into on the bottom tank and run a full syphon. If I do it this way water changes and cleaning can be done while the ssystem is still running.
No it was 2 old tanks I had laying around doing nothing with. It is on hold right now as we are waiting for a 32mm glass drill

Thanks Bold, they Hayward I shouldn't of bought as big as I did but it was cheap and I couldn't find a 20". I also have a 31 or 36" model I cant remember. but it wouldn't fit through the door. I didn't realize how big it was until I showed up at the guys house and I knew I messed up. he already had the lines cut so I had to remove the 5-700lbs of wet sand through the top hole with a cup.

the idea of having the drip filters where they are at is for easy access. as far as how often do I need to change them I will most likely do 6 months. before the water gets to these filters they are already going through a chlorine and sediment filter. I could probably get more as the other filters are changed every 3 months and the ones you see have DuPont and kx matrikx high capacity filters

This is a mess, my tandem tank stand. Holding basement foundation columns. This is turning into a very large project.
I decided to span 10 feet of 120 year old sand stone rock foundation. With a steel header, supported with 4 steel columns.
Eventually my plan is to pump in a 6" thick reinforced concrete wall.
I have some professional experience with concrete bridge pile repair, so I am not too over my head.
Rebuilding the wall has been on my mind for a while, just needed a 1500 pound fish tank, for inspiration.

Here is my jimmy rigged somewhat automated water change system in my third floor loft condo. Only water access I have is through my faucet so i hooked up a hose adapter . The hose runs to my 35 gallon trash cans where I can treat it with prime before it is pumped into my tank by a pond pump i found in my storage . The water is siphoned out of the tank with a classic gravel vacuum that I put a 25' hose on that runs to my bath tub drain. It looks ridiculous but damn it if I'm ever logging around a bunch of 5 gallon buckets again. Tried to post a video of it but keeps saying file does not have an allowable extension ? ..

This is probably a good place to ask something I have been wondering.

How do you guys change your plumbing on established tanks? I obviously am worried about unset pvc primer and glue in the system.

I want to change my return a bit and have been thinking about adding in some uv, but only seems worth it if its in-line, which I would have to cut the existing plumbing to do.

SHARK BITE, QUICK CONNECT PLUMBING FITTINGS. Pricey, but clear vinyl tube, heater hose, will some times work with hose clamps over pvc at less than 30 psi.
Their is also a pvc compression union for use in fixing underground, irrigation lines, that are always wet.
