Glasscages.com aquarium question

Seems like you figured out why it broke...I have a GC 240 and have no issues and use the foam. A few things....unless I missed it in the thread...I would use the foam next time...I would be surprised if GC does anything for you cuz it doesnt seem like there fault...that un-level top plastic trim could be from it not being silicone to the glass the exact same it might have thicker silicon in areas making the plastic not straight as an arrow.

As for what to do with the now broke tank. One thing you can do is use the 3 good pains of glass and build a plywood tank using the 3 pains front and 2 sides. There is a thread on that in the DIY section I think.

As for the thickness I always have heard 25" is as tall as you want to go with 1/2" So you might want to think/look into that situation more before you build a plywood tank using the good glass. Maybe if its braced right you will be able to use it.

My existing 96x24x24(1/2" thick) acrylic weighs maybe 150 lbs certainly not 200. I would have guessed a 96x36x25 at maybe 200 , 250 tops. As for a glass equivalent. I received the following reply from FishTank Factory:
Quote:
There is a big discrepancy between 290 pounds and 1800 pounds. Is it possible that your math is off or does 290 lbs indicate a poorly built tank ? Maybe the 290 figure is wrong, but you wouldn't think so as they build them for a living.

has to be a typo. I got a quote from Charlie and asked about the weight of a 72x30x24 and was told it was 350ish pounds so I would assume a bigger tank would weigh more

when i bought my 300g from gc i am more then happy with it. but for many reasons i didnt want to deal with a custom stand. i bought a stand from them and for $600 u can go wrong. nice looking to. solid oak.

i was worried about 3400 lbs on a custom stand for the most part. im sure i couldve built 1 for much less. but not worth the hassle.

although as mentioned its hard to say for sure why a tank breaks, it looks like in this case it may have been problems with the stand that caused stresses on the tank.

but I think one thing should be made clear: just because foam was not used, does not mean the tank should break.

fact is, 'floating bottom' style tanks have only been available commonly for about the last 15 years or so.

before that, all of our tanks were the glass bottom type. few people used foam (myself included) with no issues for many years. this was before the age of the internet where info about the use of foam spreads rapidly on hobbyist forums. Hell, my old flat bottom style tanks (90 and 65g) were 16 years old when I sold them, never resealed once.

and IMO they were made better than today's modern tanks with thinner glass.

I wonder if my modern 150g will last that long..

although glasscages does require the use of foam to honour their warranty, the fact is that for properly made tanks, it should make no difference.

the only case where it would matter if there was a raised 'pressure point' on a stand, but considering that almost all stands are the 'perimeter type' open bottom style, this is almost never an issue for glass tanks.

keep in mind as well that even when tanks were not made with a floating bottom, the stands were still all the perimeter type. this is nothing new, and is the way stands have been built long before the plastic braced trim came along.

their warranty being dependent on foam is no different than many manufacturer's insistance that their own (often CRAPPY) stands be used to honour their tanks.

I'm going to stroll into Walmart this afternoon and get a new 46" Sony Bravia XBR for my family room.

I'm going to choose to ignore the directions supplied with the TV stating not to mount close to a heat source because I want to mount it over my fireplace. I don't have a lot of clearance because I bought such a big TV, but I'm going to mount it there anyway because that's what I want to do.

It got below freezing here in South Carolina and it is going to be cold all day today, so I'm going to have a blazing fire in the fireplace tonight so my toes can be warm while I watch my new TV.

Tomorrow's going to be a great day for me because I'll get up, notice the melted bottom of the TV, fly off the handle and badmouth Walmart on the internet. Then I'm going to march down there and expect them to compensate me in some way just to make me happy.

If they don't, I'm going to get back on the internet and bad mouth them some more.

They better make me "f-n" happy is all I'm saying. I don't care that I deserve not one thing from Walmart, because I want some sort gratification for my own carelessness.

Does being a wise *** make you feel better? I am a newbie fish enthusiest TRYING to learn the hobby through internet forums. You must be one miserable M.F. feeling the need to belittle someone new to the hobby asking questions and gathering information!

Did I miss the entire purpose of MFK or are you just 100% what is NOT benneficial to this forum continuing to grow?

Thanks to everyone who has helped me to understand what went wrong.

Anyone who suggested that I would is the TINYEST way try to deceive for my own personal gain simply does not know me is the least.

Hey all, I got great news to report. I spoke to Beth from glasscages.com today. She was the greatest and treated me like I was royalty. I made it perfectly clear that the fault in the breakage of the tank was 100% my own. She still offered a free 70G of the same base size. I was very pleasantly surprised, but responded that I did not expect that they should have to go that far as a result of my ignorance (lack of knowledge). Beth held firm and absolutely insisted and stated how glasscages.com would help me become a more skilled fish keeper. Now that is FANTASTIC customer service. I am tickled pink!

I told her that I would not make the same mistake again, and admitted to also using the Lowe’s heavy duty racks as stands for the two 135's. I ordered three new stands (one for the 70 and two for the two 135's) today from them and I pick them up on the 27th of this month.

I give glasscages.com the highest possible recommendation! If this saga does not prove their dedication, pride in their work as well as sjow compassion and concern for their customers, then I don't know what possibly could.

Again I do owe most members here on MFK a great big THANK YOU for helping me to understand what I did wrong and give me a avenue to both learn and to vent, so that when I was finally ready to address the issue, I could do so in a totally unemotional way.

I think I can say with some degree of certainty that these (1,500 LB per shelf) utility storage racks DO NOT work well at all with fish tanks! They really do not look good in the house anyway. Don't be a cheapskate dummy like me. Either do it right or don't do it.

I'm psyched! Wish me luck with the setup!
