I had to do an experiment at uni, where I had to convince my housemates to live as green as possible. Just stupid stuff such as not leaving stuff on standby, not having the heating on ALL the time, turning of lights when your not in the room, switching off plug outlets when they aren't being used, cutting down on water wastage, switching to energy efficient bulbs (last 10 times as long, and saves a rediculous amount of energy and are actually brighter) etc. Basically just focusing on cutting down electric useage, water and gas. We did it for one quarter so when the bills came we'd know how much this would effect us economically. Well I can tell you for the next year and a third, we lived like that all the time. It saved us just over 200 GBP. It is worth it just for that, and that is just how you use household accessories like boiling water for a cup of coffee or whatever. If you did it for every aspect of your life you and everyone did it, you'd save a lot of money, and are living a greener lifestyle. Another important point was noone felt disadvantaged (giving things up they didn't want to) and in the knowledge it was a good way of living (and the extra cash in their pocket).
Other kind of things i think about are:
Britain could stop buying sodding strawberries all year round because they want to eat them when we can't have them (in winter) so stop importing them from portugal (good deed one: ecological footprint). The other is because of this "need" the Iberian Lynx (found in portugal and spain, although now is debated whether they are extinct from portugal) is now the most endangered big cat in the world(it was in 2003/4 anyway) and there are less than 200 in the wild. Basically because our demand has forced more agriculture cutting into their habitat. It is really things like this that piss me off, just because pete and gill down the road was some f*cking strawberries to put with their cream in december. It's not just this particular case, everything has an ecological impact, and it doesn't hurt to think about it now and again.
Sorry but sometimes i need to rant about this kind of stuff. Oh and guess what, i just don't eat strawberries lol.
