Leaves are definitely more natural but it seems like you're going to need a lot to get that true black water look

That's only a 125. They finally finished the floor in my living room so now I'm looking for at least a 300 for him. He's about the width of the tank now, unfortunately.
I will also say that I noticed an immediate difference in the Dats with the blackwater extract. They were all stable up until I turned the lights off and a lot more active. Which you know, Dats are not always active. My goal is actually to make it darker, but to find the most cost effective way to do it. The bottle I bought was $17 and I used about 1/5 of it already. I do 2 water changes per week on that tank, so at $17 a bottle and probably a bottle a month, it could be costly.
What if you made your own extract from dried leaves? That might save money but it would take more time.

Yea I've thought about that as well. I can get the leaves on aquabid, like 200 for $33 dollars. I don't mind the time involved but it seems like it would be roughly the same cost. Unfortunately, water changes ruin everything.
