going to try breeding clown loaches

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
We have about 10 I think they will need a speices only tank though but we are working on that part too. Looks like you have been doing some research on this subject I hope we can both have some luck in the area.

I've read, only read, that clown loaches require very fast current to spawn, the water has to practically be frothing so I doubt that it would be easy to do in anything but a large pond. also the article says that you should allow the water to heat up, then change it with cooler water. The article also said that the Clowns will need a high protein meal.

vortech powerhead would more likely than not provide ample current in the tank. Those things are amazing.

Will keep that in mind I am also going to make them some tight little caves as they like tight places. Have heard that they can with stand really warm water and a lot of fish like the cooling process.

I also intend to try breeding them as my excuse for getting back into the hobby after a thirty year break :)

Not sure about the caves etc. They like these to hide in but the fact that they like/need fast moving water would suggest ( to me ) that they may breed rather like trout in a chalk stream and dig a little scrape/pit in the gravel to spawn in.

Just my gut feeling but that is the premise that I will start work on.

I read some that when they breed it is at the surface and the eggs float so parents must be removed so they do't eat them. Not sure if this is true so don't quote me on it. The cave idea was so they would be comfortable and more willing to breed.

That may well be true. Who knows.

All we can really do is look at their natural temperament and their natural environment and try to draw what conclusions we can.

It seems to me ( which doesn't mean much :) ) that since they like fast and turbulent water any 'floating' eggs would get washed away downstream and be instant food for other fish, birds and probably insects.

Fast water seems to suggest that eggs would be sticky, or laid in a place where the current was slower, or possibly be buried ...... assuming the parents provide at least a minimal care for the eggs.

I also think it would be fairly safe to assume that the parents do not provide food in the same sense that Discus do, that would not really be possible in fast water.

My mind rambles on, but as I say, Who knows. Interesting discussion though.

I suspect the first thing we need to work out is what triggers the spawning....

For sure I know 1 is their size and have read that a long tank is preffered the depth is not real important. But as for ph and temp not sure there may also be a food stimulant.

I heard a long tank with a strong currents. read up about their actual home enviroment and make a tank exactly like that you have a couple years before you can start so start researching it and take exact specific notes. GR everytime I go to type in this forum I get killed in Call of Duty urg.... lol

I found the web site on breeding cl's look up clown loaches by william berg. I was mistaken about the eggs floating but if you check out thisarticle it is not long but quite informative.
