Gold or black wolf?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This black dot never fades with colour....
I reckon this one and mine are an undescribed species.... Or a brassie.
I've been researching for hour and hours.

Lol so I have a six pores Australis or mala likely lol... I'm getting to the point where I may give up and call it a wolf lol.
On another note the order still hasn't gone through, I'm more than tempted to get the black as well as the gold....
Probably asking for a disaster tho right?
I got my gold after my black and they were fine...

And well looks like we are confusing eachother lol

Lol.
I'm not researching anymore. I understand all of that group except intermedius have u shaped but add to that I can't find a single confirmed under jaw shot of a brasiliensis or a living brasiliensis I don't see why it can't be one unless you can prove me different pal.
I will net him again in a few weeks once he has settled and check the tongue and do a proper number of scale counts.

If I remember right about the taxonomy paper on wolves it mentioned that Brasi has the same folds as lacardae. So it cannot be considered to be ur fish justarn justarn . This was a idea on a similar fish seen posted on fb. It was not like any other wolf. Small but looked like curupira but had parallel folds. Couldn’t see/check the pores, so not sure but maybe brasi.

Can you find that paper pal, I've not seen that one.

Either way it has the same jaw folds as the fish in the link above that you were both considering as brassie a couple of years ago...
So confusing lol.

This was an interesting article.
On an android phone it will give you the option to translate.
From other readings I agree with this guy, brasiliensis live along side intermedius and I'm gathering intermedius are their closest relative.
They also change shape as the grow if what he says is true.
I've trawled through Google again. There is not a single reputed pic of a brasiliensis anywhere, even the dead one on the taxa sheets is the exact same image as the lac.
If the scale count is 38, it's not a hybrid? and the tongue is smooth it's gotta be a brasiliensis or new undescribed species.
I'm done for a while now lol.

Let's all take a step back and understand wolves tax can use work lol...

The fold on your fish is way narrower than reds specimen... your fish is 9" his was 12". Not much changes in the fold after 5".

The info we have on your fish is V fold and 6 pores. I can't find mala tax, so assuming they do have only 4 pores best I can say is you have an undescribed sp.

Here's my understanding of it.

With wolves they are grouped into mala and lac. Now they are grouped into each by the way there folds appear. Australis is the only exception. Simple. If there was another exception they'd state it in the tax.

Wolves are not known to hybridize. It would only be done in the wild as no one breeds them in captivity or reports it anyway. Can't say I have any real knowledge on the subject but I'd say it's possible since some species overlap in where the inhabit.

Saying you can't find a picture isn't saying much. Find me a pic of proven Hoplias teres lol. How do I know it exists if you can't? This is the reasoning I see you using. Exaggerated but the same reasoning nonetheless.

So confusing lol.
That was some time ago and even then there was still so much to look at. It was still some new info out as well. Lots of confusion about pics old and new and among a few sellers. So i believe much more sorted out now than prior. Still some questions.
