Gold x silver saum spawn

Did any of yours have the rounded faces? I had quite a few that I had to cull due to this deformity.

I can’t say I’ve had any that had particularly rounded faces.

Do you have a picture?

The worst I’ve had to deal with is having runts and disliking their fin shapes. The fin shape thing is a preference, but the runts are an issue for me. Even these guys I’m growing out seem to be growing painfully slow.
Their moms genetics.

I think I just need a better female. Not that I don’t like my girls, but they don’t produce the males I want. And the females seem to play a bigger part in how the fry turn out.

By round I mean flatter i guess? haha, hard to explain. It reminds me of a blood parrot cichlid mouth. Ill try to get some pics of 1 that has it. I remember I posted a pic of one that i bought from LFS that had it as well. Someone on here said it was a deformity, so I dont know.

I culled about 20-30 both runts and what I considered to not look right in the face. I have right at 50 left in a 75 gallon. Male white seam, female gold seam,(parents) haven't seen one white fry yet either, but most aren't showing anything yet.

here is mom n dad and the biggest out of my fry, 2.5" maybe close to 3"

I think I remember reading that thread, but can’t recall the picture from memory.
I haven’t had any with flatish faces if I’m picturing it correctly. Haha
I like the seam on your male. He is very beautiful.

Thanks. He really is a good looking fish. I found him on Craigslist after buying and surrendering a handful of juveniles trying to get a male. I still have never seen a big male in person like yours, and I dont think he will become that hefty. But hopefully he will put off some good looking male fry with similar markings.

Im still trying to get a good pic of one fry in particular with a face like what I'm talking about. I decided to keep this guy, or at least not cull him because he grew so fast even with a funky face. He seems to be growing into more now, was more noticeable before

This is the best I can get thus far. They just constantly move when they are babies

He was a lucky find then.
Reminds me of a male I saw at the same fish shop I got my male at. I passed up on buying him and just got my silver female. I still regret that.

Babies are hard to get pictures of. I take so many pictures when trying to get a halfway decent shot. But I see what you mean. It’s subtle, but noticeable. I’m not sure it’s that the face is really short or rounded. It almost looks like it’s eyes are more pronounced? At least at a glance the eyes are what stand out the most to me.

Right. Theres just something off. My LFS is giving me $2 credit each for 25 next week. So he will be in that group that goes, someone will like him, he'll be unique.

I'm glad I got the male too. I jumped all over it, paid $40 bucks for him though. He is very scared of me though, after I had to shove that little tube down his throat. But hes coming around, absolutely loves the female, is always trying to get in her fins.

Haha, that’s great that he gets along with her. Does she cause any problems with him?

I still need to downsize my fry count. I’m going to go through and cull some and then sell the rest. Minus 4 that I’m holding onto.

She definitely rules the tank, everytime I feed he takes off and she will back him up in the corner like shes telling him its her food.

They are roughly the same size, he is just slightly longer from his finnage.

I lost 4 fry last night (or maybe even from a day ago) due to not having lids on the tank. You'd think I wouldve learned my lesson by now.

I will be making lids this afternoon out of foam board. Dangit.

Awe that sucks, sorry.

I’ve had fry jump out of buckets when moving them around. Now I’ve made a habit of covering them with towels.
They can really get some hight in their jumps.

Your fish are spectacular. The male especially.
I am a big fan of the dark substrate.

Lovely spawn, and great growing out the fry.
Thanks for the share.
