this year i got two little comets at the fair (stressed half to death and in an inch and a half of water) put em in a big ol tank and got em a nice high throughput filter and they jump and play and race and nap and swim headlong into the filter, they even chase bubbles XD.they have waaay more personality than my oscars and my pacus ever had (and i liked the pacus alot!). one of them turned out to be one of those mock koi and is already an inch longer than it was starting out. im really excited to watch them grow and im planning on starting them on higher protein foods, these guys have turned me into a kid in a candy store
i feel like goldfish are the roses everyone forgot to stop and smell.

their names are Pacu Food and Pinko ^_^ and they are my new favorite fish
The first name is rather strange.

If you do hope to grow them nicely, I suggest looking into this 5M70 Mazuri gel food. Aim for protein based foods with at least 40-60% protein content. Frozen bloodworms, mosquito larva, chopped earthworms, homemade gel food recipes including canned mackerel in it, vegetable matter, extra aquarium plants particularly Egeria densa and shrimps should be included in their diet.

:welcome: to MFK by the way!

That protein packed gel probally makes the colors pop.

I agree, Liz. They are cute by nature. Actually the original goldfish were simply singletails and have a much more streamlined body. They are much more adept, versatile and feistier. The "exotic" varieties were developed by selective breeding and these ones are considered "fancy". These ones are also more prone to health issues than anything else due to the compressed bodies and GI tract that hindered their ability to survive in harsh conditions in the process.

I can understand goldfish is not for everyone but consider this. We also have plenty of other fish already selectively bred. Livebearers, flowerhorns, blood parrots and many others are no different to the selectively bred goldfish.
Lupin,
Consider this: The fish you listed are down there on the bottom of most MFK'ers lists right by goldfish, selectively bred fish are uninteresting, not remarkable in any way as they weren't created by mother nature. And the thing that makes FH's and blood parrots different from goldfish is that they don't have as many health problems, have about 10,000 times more personality, and are more healthy as feeders (livebearers are also more healthy as feeders.), haha.

So true. Wild livebearers are far more interesting and desirable, like endlers and even the wild green sailfin mollies that inhabit Florida's drainages. If you look on aquabid, you find that anything closer or actual wild type sell incredibly well. They're beautiful and healthy, selected by nature to be fittest. What isn't desireable about that? Goldfish have been, in my opinion, so bastardized that it's almost grotesque.

That's just awful.

So true. Wild fish>Ugly dilapidated, inbred, did I mention ugly, "Selectively" bred "Fish." I put fish in quotes because it's a shame to call them fish.

Oh this is a reminder on another reason I hate gold fish, people puting them In there ponds and lakes where they are nonative to. If you want an outdoor pond and live in north america put sunfish in it.

I dont think it makes a difference weather its homemade or not when people first started puting fish outside in the elements where they dont belong it should have been out lawed by the US fish and wildlife. I have no problem for those with indoor ponds or goldfish in aquariums but when there outside and you cant control where they go it shouldnt have ever been aloud.
these are the stupidest statements in this thread. :screwy: who are you to tell people what to put in the ponds THEY made? and last time i checked, goldfish werent growing legs and walking out of ponds. and if a flood will carry a goldfish to another body of water, then you got more things to worry about than a goldfish. and animals carrying a goldfish somewhere else and then letting it go? OMGWTFBBQ :screwy:

and i agree with Liz. most of us are here because of goldfish. i have no problem with them. and to go as far and say you "hate" goldfish, thats just a little pathetic. if you hate goldfish, then you need to get out more and get a LIFE

This is all based on your own perception. Unless you have tried goldfish for some time, you cannot just say that plenty more fish are more personable than goldfish. I do not believe for once there is a fish more personable than the rest. It just so happens cichlids have various personalities and can learn how to survive well unlike most other fish but you cannot deny goldies and each of every fish in other group are unique in their own right.

Healthy as feeders? I don't think so. They are often kept in poor conditions that it is not all the time you find healthy feeders that would survive to adulthood unless you select your options carefully especially sources where feeders are kept in tiptop conditions.

People sometimes put invasive species in naturally occurring ponds that connect to watersheds, which is actually a really big problem in a lot of places.

"Hate" is a term that's lost a lot of it's balls in recent history. People use it to describe general dislike, from what I've observed. I can't imagine that someone would completely despise a fish. Maybe Tamer does, I don't know. But I don't think that warrants a total thrashing.

Okay, I should stay out of things. :grinno:

intentionally releasing a fish into a naturally occurring body of water and keeping a fish in manmade pond in your yard are two totally different things.

according to this guy, non-natives should NOT be kept outdoors because they could get into the wild by an act of God like flooding or being carried off by another animal. really? come on now :WTF:
