Goldfish help, red marks that look bumpy

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So I am thinking something made it’s way into my tank bc today most of the red marks are gone....it’s the strangest thing...he’s looking almost normal again.

That is nuts. What a dramatic change. If I get a chance later, would you mind me taking a screenshot of your pictures and asking about it on another site? I’m so curious what could cause that to happen, but then resolve itself so fast.

What is going on with the fish in the back?

Please do use the pictures. I wish I knew what happened, I didn’t think he would pull through, looked to be in rough shape...if you do find anything please let me know!

The goldfish in the back is paralyzed and can barely swim properly, he’s been like that for quite some time. I think he got spooked and ran into the glass and damaged his spine.

I was contemplating putting him down but I can’t justify it, he isn’t emancipated, still eagerly eats, gets his fair share of food no problem. Sometimes he’ll make rounds around the tank but it’s clearly difficult for him. The other two goldfish will go down and hang out with him to keep him company and nudge him to swim around. He also don’t have any sores on his body from staying near the sand...the tank is pretty empty as objects make it difficult for him to swim around.

I attached a picture with a red circle around the base of his tail, that’s the section of his tail he cannot utilize properly.

This is him now, looking closely I only see small spots of red at the base of his tail on both sides but all blister looking bumps have completely gone

Oh, ok. That’s good of you to keep him around. I’d have a hard time ending a fish that can still eat just fine and is otherwise healthy.

I love my fancy goldies.

I posted those pictures, and now we wait. I’ll let you know when anything is posted. Some people on that site are very knowledgeable with goldies and koi. So I’m hoping they have seen this before.

Yea he’s my oldest fish, not old for a Goldie but he’s about 8 years old.

Goldies will always be one of my favourite fish!

I hope they can come up with something, I was thinking septicaemia but nothing really matches up with it except the redness and bumps...they don’t have bad water parameters or stress to cause it, no new fish, nothing that I can figure out to lead to it, and I’m pretty sure septicaemia doesn’t heal that quick....

Do let me know

Well, so far nothing. I only got one response and he is stumped too. And he has seen a lot. His best guess is something viral or due to water quality. Since I’m not convinced it’s water quality I’m leaning towards viral myself. What it is exactly I’m really not sure. But it would explain why it was able to resolve so fast on its own.
If it is viral you could help keep his immune system up by feeding it oranges, lemons, or limes on and off. I give my koi fruit coming into fall to boost their immune systems before winter. Could be worth a try.

Thank you for at least inquiring with another group of people.

I’m going to agree with you as I’m not convinced it water quality either, I have had these fish for quite some time and keep up with water changes, and now filter maintenance (going to clean it this weekend with the water change)

Viral would make sense as it only affected one fish in the tank...just strange it went away just as quick as it appeared.

Curtis fruit? I never knew they would eat them, also thought it would mess with water quality!
