The goldfish isn't a hybrid at all - it's a standard Carassius auratus, a commonly found carp in Asia. They naturally show golden coloring. They have been selectively bred to create the fancy types and intensify that golden color, but they're all the same species. Koi are a different species of carp altogether and hybrids don't often survive. They do exist, but it's difficult to produce them, they're sterile, and not very hardy.

Beat me to it! Good to see that little myth having knowledge dropped on it! :)

Please do!! :)

Ooo! I found an alternative! :) Apparently they don't really want the goldie back (they gave it hoping it would die :(), and my bf's mother keeps Koi in an indoor tank all winter... so I could give her the goldie to put with them when the temp gets cold again! :D

.... Or would that be a bad idea?

As long as the indoor tank is nice and huge, sounds like a great idea. Be sure to quarantine him for a few weeks before adding him to the koi tank, though. Who knows what he might be carrying. I'd feed a broad-spectrum antibacterial food while he's in quarantine and get a bit of aquarium salt into that tank to flush out any cooties. :)

hay hay, im another goldfish lover!! Just love the way them swim and eat. Pigs on water.... Just got my new 65 gallon tank and gonna buy some orandas and ranchus. Pretty pricy though over here. (im from Thailand btw, so everything in dollars is pricy for me) haha.

Awesome  i have 3 gflodfish lovers a rtc,senegal bichir and a marble goby.

The only people who hate goldfish are those who never kept goldfish in a decent/sufficient habitat.

I have 2 huge ones; one used to be orange, and is now COMPLETELY white. They always hang out with eachother, and they eat from my hand. I love them.

The comet is supremely adaptable. Can,and does live almost anywhere. In conditions that would quickly kill most all of the "tough guys".

Well said.

i rescued 4 baby comets,as a tempting buy,but now don't know where to when they grow =\
right now their bout 2 inchs all in a 29,with a 1 inch firemouth i barely got.Whats the minimum tank size you guys think i'll need for all the goldies?

IMO 4 comets fully grown shouldnt be in anything less than a 135. IE 6 feet long.

4 comets should live in a 120 happily. The length isn't as important as the width - at least 24 inches wide so they can turn around easily.
