Good Characin tank mate for Red wolf?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think a fatf would work perfectly with your bottom dwellers- assuming the polys or wolf doesn't eat him! Of all the tigers I've kept, not a single one has even acknowledged that my bottom feeders exist. The only possible exception would be my red tail black shark that's been tagged by Max a time or two, but I consider him more of a lower mid swimming fish than a true bottom fish. He occupies the same parts of the tank as Max.

Max can move amazingly fast, faster than the eye can see. I can't wait to see him go nuts after I move and get my 510 up and running!

Tigers will treat anything that looks like them as another tiger. In other words, if it has that same generally shark like shape, they're liable to be targets. Shiny fish are liable to be targets as well, regardless of shape. Keep that in mind when mixing tigers with other things.

I see no reason why you planned combo wouldn't work. I keep assuming you're getting a 125 because of how common of a size that is, but if I were you, I'd push for a 180. The extra 6" all around would really make this combo work well. I'd keep it to a single fatf however, and make sure you have at least part of the tank set up with strong current for the fish to exercise in. Having plenty of relatively dead spots for the polys and pikes won't be a problem for the tiger, I've got slack spots in my tank for my arowana with no issues. If you tried this in the 125, I'd be leery that it might be too cramped. If you tried it in a 180 though, I think you'll be fine in all but the longest of the long term (Pushing ten years). I expect that given sufficient time, a fatf could approach 2', but it would take a very, very long time, and then only if its a female.

Ill be building the tank, so i can do 180 for sure, just gotta make sure my room can suppourt that weight haha. This is getting to be a crazy stock idea, that i love btw. I really think im going to go for a FATF

Also, I realized I missed your "what is a tat?"

Tat refers to Hydrolycys tatauaia, a red tail payara. Its fair to think of them as a mini armatus that wont really get over a foot, except in the longest of the long term. Just like a fatf. It could be the perfect mid size crown jewel characin to live with your fatf. :) IMHO, I think they have nicer colors than an army, too. Don't kill me guys! ;)

Ah! My favorite pay coincidentally! Always assumed they got big big, thats good to know ill be looking for one for sure now.

Bichirs on bottom, a few geophagus (ill go for darker colored ones, such as gymno, may have to get rid of my heckelli if they are too shiny) some sort of armored cat (would like to go with a spotted and striped raphael)

Tat, FATF, Red Hi Fin wolf, and some false gar in the middle/top. Oh wow. This tank is going to be fierce as hell!!! Ill have to up my feeder breeding program for sure, maybe move up to poecillia gilla (nic. Molly) ? Rapps has some now, hopefully can get a shipment out soon. Also i could probably trade the fry (that come out at like 1.5 inches) for other foods at the LFS seeing as though they are pretty rare.

Just something to keep in mind if you're planning on building a tank:

For sizes 240 and down, if you peruse Craigslist for a sufficient length of time, the probability of finding a good quality tank for less than the cost of building one of the same size will always become 1.

In simpler language, it'll be cheaper to buy the right tank used than to build it unless you're going big enough to keep a GATF. 180-240 gallon tanks rarely but routinely pop up in the $300 range. You'll spend nearly that much on alone on quality plywood; never mind glass, fiberglass, sealant and various miscellaneous sundries.

Hmm i havent seen one pop up thats the right dimensions so far (just started looking a couple months ago), thats also why i like the idea of the build because i can make it to my exact liking ya know? I also will be working w/ a custom aquarium company too so the boss may be able to hook me up with cheaper materials

It really depends on the personality of the red wolf. It's amazing how much they vary from fish to fish, I had one that didn't even touch a gourami that lept from tank to tank, and then I had another that was the most vicious little fish I have ever kept, and within 1 day of being in a predator tank he beat up an Oscar that was probably 5 times the little dude's weight. (I moved him out of that tank)

I'm waiting for this thread update, cause i myself keep a red wolf. My idea is the same, to keep a red wolf with other characin like silver dollars (smaller species). I just moved my wolf to a new tank and he just begin to accept the new environment. So the plan is to let my wolf settle first for at least a month, then try to introduce tank mates.

I would say leporinus. They don’t take crap from anyone but don’t have the ability to do substantial damage to the wolf.
