here are some suggestions as far as lizards bearded dragons are great but they need uvb lighting, leopard geckos are great easy and i think im the only person ever bit by one, boas are great snakes especially surinames but they get long possible 12 feet , ball pythons are great stay relatively small and are very docile,
milk snakes, king snakes, corn snakes all are great and easy just what ever you decide make sure you read everything about it reptiles are the best any question regarding any one you decide i would be happy to answer or help you in anyway just PM me and let me know good luck and happy herping :)

Go with a snake, kings or corns, they would be the simplest to house even as adults and they stay a good size. If you go with a lizard I would go with a beardie, they have personality and are active a lot.

I think that a Water Dragon would be awesome! (lol, i want one too!haha)
They colour up nicely, get same size as beardies, but with long tail, love water, can be petted! and they are hardy too!!! I love those little critters!!!

So in all, they are just a prettier Bearded Dragon, not saying beardeds arent pretty lol.

House geckos if you just want to look, they are fast little snots
yup
longtailed grass lizards for cheap and low maintainence
require twice daily misting along with a good UVB bulb, so not cheap
Cuban anoles, fair sized, hand tameable
no experience
and my favorites, tokays, ornery little guys that bark and often bite, but not to hard, all they need is a tank, a heater, and food. They are also low priced and good sized
no experience

I also feel bearded dragons are not good beginer reptiles, do to the fact that they require 25-75 crickets a day at around 5-9 months old.

do not get a uromastyx they need a lot of heat with like a basking spot of around 120-140 and they for the most part vegetarians.

Jungle runners.

Rhacodactylus ciliatus (crested geko) they are very cool, a co worker has on and its very nice. I personally like snakes, and my first reptile was an Elaphi Bardi, or Bairds ratsnake. He is great, easy to take case of, and very friendly
