I have been looking into some larger monitors (I want to get a hatchling and raise him/her up to an adult.). I have come down to a select few that I like and want to know how they would be as a display animal. I will not be taking them out and holidng them daily (as I am not home all day to have him out handling him for an hour or two a day), I would just let them do there thing.

Here is what I have been looking at. Some of them don't get as large as the others, but I still consider them large Monitors.

1.) Crocodile Monitor
2.) Black Throat Monitor
3.) Argus Monitor
4.) Water Monitor
5.) Green Tree Monitor

I may get a few Ackies and Timors, but they will just be for fun.

So anyone with ANY experience with ANY of these monitors please give me your opinions on what would be a good canidate, what is your's housed in, diet, ect? Any information would be incredibly helpful.

Thanks,
Kevin

If this is your first monitor Stay away from the crocs, I'd go with the argus. They would be the most entertaining.

I don't know about your monitor experience or knowledge... but Crocs are a pretty bad idea, and dangerous to even experienced keepers and all that jazz. Also Crocs and Blackthroats are illegal in NY (or Blackthroat would be good) But, may I suggest a sav? But if that is no option I'd say a timor, argus, or water monitor.

Gosh darn it...why is everything freaking illegal in NY!? I guess I will go with an Argus or Water Monitor...leaning towards the Water Monitor.

Is it an aggressive species your actually wanting? You listed quite a few aggressive ones, not exactly large ones but just plain (usually) nasty.
I have a nile monitor and he is pretty entertaining and puts on a good display when chasing feeder locusts etc

I'm not singling anything out and saying I want a plain old angry Monitor. I just want something that doesn't like being handled. Something that will look great in a display cage.

Aggressive vs defensive = two completely different things, most wild caught monitors are defensive because they associate humans with fear. Cbb Or even ch babies not so much which is why I suggested argus.

+1 for argus, If I had tank size etc, I would get an argus. also Nile monitors, white throat monitors, and water monitors are also illegal in NY. Lol NY kind of sucks :p
