I have 2 and have had them for over a year .... both were purchased at 7 inches and 1 is now 24-25 and the other is 22 .... I keep them in a tropical set up with 82-83 degree water and lots of aeration
Quick description, they take slowly to the introduction to a new tank, some won't eat for a while in my experience .... I've moved mine a couple times and they always get weird for a week or so, and when they were cramped into my 220 they did fight each other, but I think that was more fighting for the prime spot ... they love current and will literally sit right in front of a power head, so I'd suggest a bottom level power head for them to swim in front of
They are lazy much of the time, and really don't move much, but don't be fooled, when its feeding time they are the most explosive and powerful fish I've ever seen .... I need to do a feeding vid of mine cause it really is insane when they go into feeding mode with sand flying and large pieces of wood being knocked over and every other fish darting out of the way! .... they are extremely fast and explosive swimmers as well, and its not uncommon to see them all over the tank at night, even towards the top on the sides of the tank, although mine have stopped doing this as they approached the 2 foot mark ... they seemed to like bubbles too, so I hooked an airline up to a powerhead, blowing a bubbly stream at them in my 220, but now their in my 400 and I do not have this, although the tank has a ton of water movement so again I'd say strong current is a must
I never fed mine live and they never attacked anyone, and I thought I was in the clear, then a 6 inch IT DAT dissapeared, which is not an easy fish to eat .... the DAT was wider than his mouth without the spines, but they are so strong there's no doubt that he just crushed him until he fit .... 3 weeks later my fiances 8 inch and thick golby was eaten ... so as with most catfish you can't trust them
All that being said I absolutely love them and think they are such an impressive fish, but they grow fast and will eat large tank mates ..... I'd def be concerned about the clown loaches .... fish that occupy the same territory are def most at risk .... mine has never attacked my ATF's but did attack my Armatus recently and the ATF's are smaller than the Army, and I think this is because the Army chills at the bottom while the ATF's are more upper tank .... all has been quiet now for the last month so hopefully he won't eat anyone anytime soon ... I have some pics in the other Characins media lounge along with some of my goonch experiences
Good luck with them, they are truly an amazing monster fish!
