got a 125 for preds crazy deal!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Always great to run into deals like this.

Free tanks are never free though...my 125g was a "gift" I received last summer. People that "know what they are doing" never sell stuff for that cheap.

Not to say you dont have a steal, Im happy for you, looking forward to seeing it, just realize...this is only the beginning. :D

lol. the guy i got it from is loaded and doesnt care about the money. i filled it mon night and besides having to re teflon tape a few places everythin is great. its in our bed room so its a little loud but it empty so i think once i get bio balls or somethin and build a hood it will be a little quieter. it really hasnt botherd me at all.
that night i hardly slept i was terrified i was goin to get up and step onto soggy carpet. but so far so good. the seems look good too. the only thing i need now is sand rock, fish, lights, and to build my hood.
aside from fish i expect to pay about 250. so overall thats good for a salt tank. considering my reef has cost me a small fortune im happy :)

lol, it was one of those right place at the right time deals man.
and here is the better news. i got some free live rock last night from a friend (one big piece and about 2 lbs of rubble for the sump) and tonight i am trading an old uv sterilizer for about 30-40 lbs of live rock. and ontop of that a guy at the lfs has a bunch of black reef sand he is goin to give me for free!
my question is what do yall think of black for a pred tank?

ps. just realized i hit a thousand posts!!! just had to point that out :)

Black sand looks cool...here are a couple issues I have ran into using it in the past.

1. Its probably a silicate. - This means that it will constantly be generating diatom algae for the rest of forever while it is in your tank.

2. It is hard to clean. Too fine to use a gravel vac, you literally have to stir up your whole entire sand bed and hope that you remove as much crud as possible while it is all in suspension. - Not something I want to do in a tank with heavy bioload.

Just my .02, dont spend it all in one place now. :D

this sand is pretty heavy so hopefully it wont be bad. idk what kind this is so we will see. im goin to do a shallow sand bed so hopefully it wont trap too much junk.
is there any way to control diatoms?
i am only goin to have 2 2 bulb t5 fixtures on it so hopefully algea wont be bad.
i just hope it looks bright enough with that black absorbing all the light.
what is the black sand effect on salt fish? it seems like they dont bleach out like fresh fish do on white sand so im curiuos what the black will do

+1 to this brother...

i put the black in and it looks pretty good. it is slightly magnetic but i dont plan on having bright light so hopefully i wont have to clean but when i do a water change and i can just do it by hand. no biggy.
also put a green corris wrasse in and he is doin good so hopefully next week i can add a real fish :)
oh another inhabitant is a coast shrimp. had to throw him in since he made it 2 and a half hours in no water!!!! i was scooping them out of a bucket and putting them in a bag to freez and one flicked and he has been alive for 2 days now. he will survive untill the first pred goes in at least.
all i need now is lids and lights and im golden :)
so far money spent:
150-tank, stand, lids, pump, sump and uv sterilizer that i traded for 30 lbs of rock.
40- on more rock and rubble for the sump.
free- black sand :)

expecting to spend around 1oo for lights and 80 to make a hood. also im goin to add a huge octopus skimmer before i get everythin in there.

inhabitants will most likely be:
miniatus grouper
panther grouper
oriental sweetlips
powder blue
potters angel
hal tusk
banded cat shark
tesalata eel.....
how does that sound?
