Green Terror or Red Devil

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes, they will be for life.
Will probably settle for one then.

Defitately agree with that!

I will most likely upgrade the tank but not sure when so not worth risking at this stage.

What about a catfish like a Raphael or Bristlenose to pick up all the wasted food?... ... Or am I defeating the idea of a 'wet pet' setup?

You can get the BPs later if you decide to get a 180g (good plan on your part).

GT's will scour the bottom for food, and can be endless garbage disposals, so no need for a bottom feeder unless you really want one. Bottom feeders need love too and should be fed appropriately, and not regulated just to scraps.

GT's tend to produce longer "strings" of poo than other cichlids, which suggests to me a diet with aquatic vegetation is really good for them. I would add rotate in New Life Spectrum Algaemax due to high algae (aka veggie) content to your regular pellet choice.

If you have the parrot in with the terror, it's not really a "wet pet" setup anymore. The fish will probably interact with each other- the "wet pet" thing is usually a very aggressive or interactive species with nothing else in the tank, so the fish interacts with the owner more, since there are no fish to distract it. I also have found 2 to be a bad number when it comes to cichlids- if only two in the tank, the subdominant one will get beaten on if the dominant one is at all aggressive. I don't think the tank will be big enough for the terror and 2 parrots though- Personally I would just get the green terror if you want it to be interactive.

Thanks.
What about the danios?

Thanks.
What about the danios?
I think giant danios would be a pretty good choice as far as dithers, I have found them to (usually) be too fast for large cichlids to eat. Green terrors are not particularly predatory, so should be okay. Personally I like to stock my tanks to a particular region; so I might do some large tetras like Colombians in place of the danios (which are from asia) to keep it south American. But, if you don't care about the locality, I think the danios would likely be fine.

I've kept Danios in all my tanks except with my Oscar. They will be fine.

As far as the blood parrot goes......I honestly think you would be more pleased with a GT pair than trying to get two different fish to coexist. Gourami Swami Gourami Swami is correct...2 is a bad number for different species (and blood parrots can be real bullies and could possibly hurt a small GT easily.) 65 gallons is a tad small for a GT pair, but would be okay for awhile. The only real aggression I've seen was from my female is during spawning...rest of the time its small chases for about a foot or so just to say " i can get you if i wanted"

two females would be great in a 65, or even two males, but plan on upgrading eventually.

A breeding pair male/female would be okay too for awhile, but I would upgrade after a year or two. Males can reach 8" if given the right conditions.

You will never appreciate a true wet pet with other cichlids in there, as gourami said.
I would do a GT and an l001 pleco for algae control.
I would consider 10 Buenos Aires tetra if you really want a school.

personally I have found the "2 cichlids" thing is even more true of same-species fish; ie a blood parrot and GT would be better than 2 male GT's.
I agree with you that the 65 would be a bit small for a pair of GT as well

Yeah every situation is different. I have a 5'' Texas that lived very peacefully with a large, very timid Oscar. Same Oscar with GT great results. But that Texas refuses to live with anything other than a large pleco and danios.

Im currently in the situation of dedicating a 40 breeder to a 4'' Salvini. My other 40 breeder has 2 juvenile GT in it and the bigger one does chase the smaller one but.......nothing to the effect of how my Texas goes after other fish.

Its all a crapshoot in my opinion. Even if I was to put them all in my 120 gallon, i feel that Texas would wreak havoc. I don't know why I like him so much, he hides most of the day anyways haha.

Really my GT's are the only species I've ever had more than one of in one tank, so I'm not that experienced with same species aggression.

Its never sure thing with combing any fish. My GT kills danios. He doesn't eat them, just kills them. If you want a wet pet, stick to one fish. That tank should be fine with a single GT. It will probably be out and about, shaking its head at everything.

It's a shame you can't commit to a bigger tank cause a nice Midas is a great character.
This Rufus, he is 11".
