Firemouths can reach 6 inch or more and their attitudes match that of their cichlid nature in a tank that size you will have constant fighting. A 55 gallon is a nice size but rather small and very limiting to what you can keep. Do you know what a stream tank is? Hill stream loaches are very interesting and a 55 would make a great lifetime tank plus it would save your parents electricity cuz you would not need to run a heater in the tank.

You cud go with convicts but they will breed like crazy if u get males and females they will also becom really aggressive wen breeding... You could also go with salvini's...not too familiar with severums but they could work

i believe i said they breed bad..which was a concern..

imo firemouths would be perfect. get about 6-8 juveniles if possible and add a dozen or so platys, some plants, driftwood etc and you'll have a really nice looking and active tank :)

you sure it seems like a overstocked tank..

it would be but its the only way to have many aggresiv fish in one tank the trick is to overstock so they all distribut aggression just make sure you have excellent filtration and keep up on weekly water changes..

ok i never heard of distributing aggression with fish..but yea i can see the filtration and water changing to be true..but um i dont really get how like 2 or 3 possibly 4 firemouths would be bad in a sense for a 55 gallon long..

these fish are agressive the males will fight contantly untill dominance is established and if the dominant male is an A** H*** he will bully the other fish

I should have explained further. You would eventually have to dwindle down the number of firemouths most likely. In the end you could keep 1, or maybe 2 pairs depending on how well they get along. However as juveniles they can be rather shy and stress easy so that's why I recommended 6-8 juveniles to start with. Plus if you want to pair them off then it's best to get a larger number of them and let pairs form naturally.

You could also do an amazonian tank, get some rams and angels with a small schools of tetras and a couple cool but smaller plecos, like clowns. With some large drift wood and alot of plants it would be amazing.
