Green Tiger barbs weak?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
thats good to hear fish bum and good that yours are staying healthy. did you get them from petco or somewhere else?

I got mine from a LFS. They were the first fish I had in this tank. They were very small juvis, but grew, and are growing fast. They eat EVERYTHING!
I think the 15 I have cost about $50,but worth it IMO.

I agree fishbum, I just think it was a weak stock. All the ones who have made it are doing well.

Fishguts, after you "chunks" claim I went ahead and did a feeding video. Only in my video I fed them shrimp to show just how much damage they actually can do on flesh. You''ll notice after the 2min mark they will get alot more active in tearing up the peices. Due to the sunlight the video is not as clear as I would have liked, but its definently clear enough. If they had teeth capable of tearing chunks out of flesh so easily the shrimp would be gone in no time. However, you can see they aren't making much progress. Fins are easier to chew up then the actual fish.It takes them and the clowns a few hours to finish them off. You will also knotice my Midas has "LONG TRAILS" and none of the 24(8 of each type) tiger barbs are stalking him. My 7 clown loaches were chilling out the in the Root decorations as they come out later in the day and this was 9:30am, but you'll see a couple make small cameos. The plecos in case anyone is curious are Albino Bristlenose Plecos.

Same song, different Video.

ive never ever had tiger barbs eat eachother or kill eachother i think it was your jags now those are mean tiger barbs will just school together if your tigers are killing eachother your doing something wrong

yeah i dont think it was anyone actually killing each other i guess its just that the green ones are of weaker stock at petco so they were just stressing out easier and dieing or something the jags definitely dont bother them enough to kill them and i have the more aggressive one separated right now anyways. and thanks scott, i saw petcos sale when i went to go get some more green ones its actually why i got more of them, they were having the same sale on the regulars with 5 for $5 but apparently it ended this past weekend so the green ones were actually cheaper :) and still need to go bring back the one that died but i just put it in the freezer and will return it after they get more fish in next week because i bought out all the greens they had

Yeah, I doubt they are beating each other up. Leave a light on and power feed them for acouple days. Thats how I got mine through.

The only ones that really fight are adults over dominenace. The two largest tiger barbs in the Video are males. Now they do have bite marks and you can see on their fins they have nips. Thats from fighting for dominance which those two are the dominant fish of the school. Tried to get more females then males, but they don't think there are enough to go around.:grinno:

I've grown fond of Bala Sharks lol, down the road when I get more tanks and more room... I'll try some Tiger Barbs. I just don't trust em with my Dempsey's at this point... I think it's more of I don't trust the Dempseys rather. I'd hate to spend the money on some and each day another ones missing. I'd like to have different fish in different tanks with the cichlids to give some different looks to each tank.

As for Clown Loaches, they definitely can hold their own. I watched my friends 6-7" one take on his large KLM Flowerhorn over food and punk the FH and took the food. They're awesome fish as well.

No offence, but chucks out of Fire Eels, kill clown loaches, and stalk big cichlids that if they wanted to could take them out with a bite? I think thats all exagerated. Those would have had to been VERY small eels and clowns. I feed my guys salad shrimp which I cut into small peices. It takes them hours to eat and tear apart which is already very small. Those guys would have had to been dead for them to take "chuncks" out of them. Tigers and clowns regulary schoal together and a CL can easily out manuver a Tiger. Not to mention they can handle a tiger as I have seen them hold their own against cichlids their own size. Look at cichlidscene's(cichlidscene.com) videos and you'll see one of his CL's stand up his white Midas. I can show you tons of vids or you can look it up yourself on you tube of Tigers and clowns schoalling together.

As for the larger cichlid, no way were they stalking it like that. Maybe schooling near by or swimming in the direction of yes. Stalking trying to nail a larger and more powerful fish that can end them with a bite, clearly not. If a barb was to nail a cichlid, any cichlid would chase and finaly corner it. I have 16 Tigers in with my Midas, they clear a path when he is coming as you saw in the video and give him room. I can see how you thought it could be stalking as they will regulary follow a safe distance behind. They aren't waiting to nail him though, they are just waiting for him to move. Ussually because he is eating the good stuff I drop in there with them. These aren't Piranha.

Also, fins grow back regenerate no problem. Especially with cichlids that tend to have serious skirmishes. Once in a while you have one that might not, but thats usually due to a difomrity.

Calm down fella, im not just making ish up here. My fire eel use to beg for food at the top and his tail would be wiggling and they bite and shreaded his tail a couple times. They shreaded my loach till he stressed to death. And yes the dominant barb did follow my green terror around and nibble at her tail nonstop. Ive seen them eat half of another barb in less than 8hrs at night. IME these fish are like little piranha. I dont care what your fish do, im just explaining what happened in my experiences with barbs. I know these fish can get along but alot of times they dont. No need to act like your king dick tiger barb
