I never use arly straw, i just know it works, not exactly how lol

yeah they were popular about 8 years ago. Not anymore because of the mess. That's why I have tons of it and no one wants it. Hays are for horses!

i fought the same green water fight with my 600g pond for a while now. Did a complete water change, cleaned out the filter and installed a 36 watt uv sterilizer. water has been crystal clear for almost a month now.

UV is good advice, but make sure your flow rate is right. Wrong flow rate = wrong amount/length of water flowing past exposure to UV so it kills the wrong stuff. Also start growing watercress, it's great at outcompeting algae for nitrates and phosphates. Barley straw is ok, but takes a few weeks to rot and create the chemical reaction it uses to do its thing. As an emergency measure put a wooden lid over 3/4 of the pond, algae needs light :)

Can you point me at any article that discusses the proper flow rate for UV?

Each manufacturer has a different chamber size and lamp so the output dose must be calculated. Some manufacterer have provided this data for their unit but may not be good for other units.
If you have the dimensions of a particular unit, I can run a program for you to determine the flow rate you need for a targeted dose (mJ).

I have around a 300 gallon plastic outdoor pond. I use a 500gph pump with a homemade pre-filter (2 litre bottle filled with filter floss and activated carbon) and i have about 3 water hyacinth potted in the pond. I also have the output of the pump going to a homemade PVC fountain (3/4" PVC pipe with holes drilled in the sides and in the stopper at the top) in the middle of the pond to agitate the surface water. I live in Trinidad where the sun is really hot and my pond has been algae free for 3 months. All i do is clean (or replace the filter floss and carbon) in the pre-filter and keep the water hyacinth under control from take over the pond.

Algae free AND crystal clear. lol almost forgot that part.
The fountain can be made to your liking and will add some aesthetics to your pond. The pump i use is an Intex Model 02 (remained after pool rotted). Will post pics soon.
