What is your opinion of buying a fish with the intent of growing out to a certain length, then selling. I have been toying with the idea of getting a Clown Knife or Arowana for my 180, growing it out until it is at the point of needing a bigger tank, and selling. Not really looking to make money, but to be able to keep the fish that I don't have a big enough tank for. Remember this is just a question, not a gas soaked thread waiting for a flame.
Check out very careful the sale market before you buy a fish you know will outgrow your tank. I would at the minimum make sure there were a couple of pet stores that would take it back.
If you have a 180, why not get a black arrowana? They cost more and are harder to find, but it should not outgrow your tank. There are likely knife fish options, that aren't as large as clown knifes.

both those fish get too large for a 180, black aro get 3-4' long and won't have room to turn around
Since you've got an LFS that will take them regardless I'd say no problem at all.
If it were ME, I'd say huge problem. There'd be no way I could reasonably assure myself that I'd be able to get rid of a half-grown monster in my area. No LFS's around even deal with freshwater, much less would be willing to take on a monster etc etc.
That'd be my caveat, as everyone else has said...as long as you KNOW of at least one good place for them to go down the road, then have fun man! I wish I could do something like that...I'd be growing an ornate bichir right now
This part may sound a little 'messed up,' but its also a great way to 'try out' different monster fish. You've already got a halfway home for most of them with the 180. Now you can grow out different fish and see how you like keeping them etc etc. Then when you find one you absolutely have to keep you can build a tank around it. Rather than goign out and buying a 3-400g tank without REALLY knowing if you're going to want to keep the fish that require that sort of tank.
I think its a good idea in your situation, and I'll stop rambling on about it
