Hi all, new to the forums and love looking at all of your Gold Saums. I just got 2 yesterday. Here they are, and can anyone tell me there sex at such a young age? There quite different in coloring and pattering, the dark one is the more aggressive one and is already showing the other fish whos boss. The current dominant fish in the tank is a Fire Mouth that is about twice there size.
Heres the first one
And the second

Since the 'real' experts haven't responded, I"ll give it a shot :-)
My opinion is the 1st is a male given his color and heavier body and the 2nd is a female. I'm no expert but I went through the same thing with my 2. Here's my male (1st) then female (2nd). My female looks like the 2nd one of yours with less color and not much of a forehead. (These pics are a couple months old, I've got to get a new camera and update pics-my camera quit on me).

Don't see too many original green terrors these days. Nice setup! How do they get along?

Ty for your reply, thats what i was thinking also. It just surprised me the smaller fish i thought to be the female was far more aggressive than the male and holds her own against some of the larger fire mouths.

The fish I have that I know are females definitely do hold their own against others. I wonder if females are bossier than males :-) I think it's bluff when they act that way towards males, the get by with it because males naturally defer to females. I had a young male Texas who'd have killed any other male cichlid of any size but the Veiltail (his size) bossed him like crazy. That's how I knew she was a female, he'd have clobbered her if she'd have been a male. (I wish now I'd have kept him).

My female saum is super aggressive. She is about 5 inches now I suppose and attacks anyone getting too close to the glass (unless my Midavil intervenes as she doesn't seem to appreciate squabbles unless she starts them).

thanks. they all get along fine. the pair owns the left side of the tank. the other 7 are fine in close quarters behind the driftwood. no fins are nipped. only a slight chase if someone gets too close to the females rock. at feeding time tho, theyre all best friends.

Very nice ScottXGTR allways a treat to see some true GTs
