Thanks Roliva. I wish he'd eat those tiger barbs soon cuz they eat his fin trailers and that really annoys me!

Btw what happened to your big umbee?
Honestly I don't know what type of infection he had. It happened several weeks ago when he started becoming lethargic and slowed down his appetite. Then he had a swim bladder problem. The end was developing pimple like lesions, maybe 5 or 6 the most. I tried to treat with furanase, maracyn and maracyn II but nothing helped:confused:.

Really sorry about this. That must have been very disappointing for you. Sometimes fish just die like people die from heart attacks etc. Wish you good luck with your little future monsters as a fellow umbee fan. Still havent got my umbee though:irked:

Here are my additions to the thread. They're all (4) growing out in a 55g for now. Please excuse the crappy flash lighting- I haven't got a light fixture over the tank just yet.

Here's the smallest, which I suspect female. You can make out the sex organs if you look close enough.

Here's suspected female #2. Any ideas as to the white spots on her tailfin?

This is the Alpha- he definitely rules the tank!

Can't wait to see him. Where'd you pick this one up from?

just a Q, and I figured this was the best place to ask it.

i got a gold saum a couple months ago. he/she barely eats (chews and spits out almost all food it takes into its mouth) and is growing very slowly (maybe went from 1.5" to 2.5" in two months). is this normal eating and growth behavior for a saum?

here are pics, just 'cause I know people like pics:

they were taken when I first got him, he's doubled in size since then.

his eating patterns are just so much different than any other cichlids I've kept, it makes me worry that it could be eating more and growing faster.

Petsmart. It looks alright, still small, hardly any color. But this one has red trimming and extened fins and is longer bodied.

Saums can be picky, but your little one should learn he has to eat to survive. Don't feed for a day then do the next see if it helps at all. Switch foods? Get varietys? Idk, as far as growth, at that size your almost right there for normal growth. I would say a good growth would be .75 inches a month until they reach about 4 or 5
