Is it the gravel that causes the coloration difference? The ones I see at the LFS are in barebottom tanks and are usually dark. At home mine are very lightly colored (natural colored gravel)
 
WOW AWESOME PICS IVE NOTCED ITS NOT THE GRAVEL THAT CHANGES THE COLOR BUT DEF LIGHTING AND WATER TEMP ESPECIALLY IF YOU GOT A FEMALE IN THE TANK WITH HIM
 
The light is a 40 watt power-glo. I switched to black sand, thats the only recent difference. I wish he would grow faster though lol.

dark colored substrate is supposed to make the fish's colors darker. On white sand, it can get "washed out". I think his color looks better with black sand, but maybe I'm just delusional lol

LOL. Looks like he was getting tired(yawning, lol) then noticed that you were there and wanted some grub. Nice Saum. Looks like mine just a tiny bit smaller thats all.

Sometimes he will try and attack me through the glass, sometimes he just chills.

thanks. Clown loaches, giant danios, and a striped raphael catfish. The thank is 75 gallons.
