They sell steel shot too, but thats for hunting, stay away from it, it's expensive and not useful in home protection.
They do make gun safe's with fingerprint technology, Look on websites like Bass Pro or Cabelas. I still think you should keep them unloaded, it only takes a second to chamber a round in a shotgun and you can't accidently fire an unloaded gun. Just my preference on that matter.
In the state of Maryland, you can buy and walk out with a shotgun the same day. The 14-day waiting period is only for handguns. However, Do not go to a gun shop and tell them you have to walk out of there with a gun today. We had a few people do that at bass pro, they were not allowed to buy guns, and a red flag went up on their record. I have bought several shotguns and walked out that day. It just takes a little while for them to call in your information and get a quick background check on you.

When I get a shotgun, I will practice firing it with my right hand. I will practice firing it with my left hand, incase I lose my right hand. I will go through each room, and practice covering. Reverse, I know we have had issues in the past. Do not make this into a "You shouldn't own a gun, since you are ignorant about guns". "
Just using your terminology, you think a gun is a tool, I think a gun is a weapon.
A difference of opinion.......
