This weekend I cleared out my 180g (6x2) and I plan to order a group of haitiensis very soon, I read through your entire thread and had a few questions I was hoping to get answered....
1. Where did you get your juveniles from? I've only seen them regularly available from "The Wet Spot".
2. What would be a good number of juveniles to get in hope of getting a breeding pair? I was thinking somewhere between 6-8.
3. Tank setup...from all the information I've been able to find it seems I've run across a few constants, high temperature, low stress environment, and disciplined diet. I plan to keep my tank somewhere in the neighborhood of 85F, with two FX6 canisters and an emperor 400 hob, and round it out with a large air pump running two air stones. The tank is situated in my wife's office and it's just us living in the house, so I feel like its a fairly low stress environment, no kids or anything to bang on the glass. Finally diet, this to me seems like it's garnered the most variance in information, some swear by low protein vegetable based yet others feed it what I consider to be higher protein foods. After looking around I've determined Omega One Super Kelp flakes to be a good choice, the first two ingredients are kelp and spirulina and the crude protein content is 33%. That was my plans for their staple diet then supplement with frozen bloodworms/spirulina brine. I see a lot of people suggest feeding them peas as well, would I just be chopping them up and throwing them in the tank or ...?
4. Tankmates...or lack thereof, again keeping with low stress I plan on just keeping the group of juveniles in the tank with nothing else besides live plants.
Great thread, it was very interesting reading about your experiences over the last year or so with them and your enthusiasm about the species is infectious!
