Hang-ons vs. Canisters vs. Sumps

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I consider myself a novice to intermediate fish keeper and am in love with the FX5's. I have a 100g and run two FX5's on them.

Loll; why are you running two fx5s on a 100g? So over kill just for a 100g you could save money and less pita with one fx5 lol

sump all the way! though a sump/canister is good too.

my setup: 4 standpipe drains, 6 returns with the addition of a octagon closed loop system for extra water current.
sump is filled with ceramic rings, bio balls, AAA grade Japanese matts & filter socks with polishers around the pump.
Also got plants in the sump and in the tank. crystal clear pristine water all day long :) oh and 30% wc every 3 days.

:nilly:

Given the bio load 2 fx5 may not be overkill! I wish i had 2, instead i have 1 and an ac110.
Realisticly hes pushing 900-1000gph so thats a 10x turnover rate! Perfect for big messy fish imo!

With two FX5's, whatever bioload they have in the 100 will be easily handled, the time between filter maintenance will be shortened, and they will have to do less substrate vacuuming. Sounds like removing one would be a bigger pain in the ass than leaving both.

Electricity is costly (as raas) around here, so canister all the way- the sealed system doesn't require lifting water so takes way less power.
If space in the cabinet is an issue you can set several independently plumbed & valved canisters in series to a) increase total filtrative capacity, b) increase time between maintenance and c) make maintenance easier as you can take an individual module out and clean it in the sink. As it's modular it can be fit into tighter or more intricate spaces.

If you're feeling DIY-y you can make the non-powered canister modules out of buckets (5-Gal industrial mayo containers=great) or sections of PVC pipe. If you can get clear pipe & screw caps they can even have plants, moss or filamentous algae in them to remove fish-pee.
Food for thought...

I might do 2 fx5's sounds like the way to go but ill look into the eheim too with what's in the tank I don't think anything would be overkill

I would just buy one to start... If you find ammonia/nitrite problems then add more. I would just load mechanical pads and bio materials in the fx5...carbon when needed, can be added/removed via the emperors.

Yea those quick releases are a shower lol

Forgot to close both valves today before pulling em, luckily i have a drip pan underneath.

I'm going with an eheim I forget the model but the guy at my lfs said that the eheim brand is the best out there
