You are probably lucky and your water is great...I don't have the luxary of good water and I have to work at it. :( If I don't add buffer every week with water changes my Ph just plummets.

Oh, by the way...Congrats on the Kyogas, I had those for a while!!!! Awesome fish!!!

thank you im excited about em... i really like the one in ur avatar i might try to get my hand on some of them next... and yeah luckily water is good it makes fish care a lot easier especially as you expand to more and more tanks....

I have one of these He doesnt have this much color yet though I also have a female one I can't wait till they breed... i havn't had any victorians before exept this one I couldnt believe it when I found a male and female at the lfs because around here It's near impossible to fing vics... how many kyogas do you have?? Its best to keep one male with several females or else they will fight like crazy till they kill each other.

That fish pictured is actually believed to be a phytophagus and thickskin hybrid. The picture is from african-cichlid.com owned by Kevin Bauman. I believe you have phytophagus, not a hybrid. ;)

i was told they will start breeding at about 1.5 -2 inches... cichlids seem to grow rapidly.. i got red zebra, bumble bee and cobalt about 5 months ago all were 1.5 inches now all 3 are pushing 4 inches

I believe 2 inches is the size that they will start breeding at. I haven't seen kyogas breed at 1.5" as of yet. Here is a link to a young breeding group of kyoga flamebacks only at 2 inches.

Bre... what kind of cichlid is that as your avator? Very nice looking fish!! I've never seen one quite like it... !!!!

I didn't realize they could breed so young bcthe book I have on them says they will start flirting/ flashing their color at each other to attract them for breeding at around 6-8 months but possibly not breed to a year or older but that could just be mbunas or peacocks... I've only had mine for a year and my fav is my ob peacock which is a hybrid but hes awesome!! My others as far as I know are not hybrids though and they just stick with their own kind so far....

This is a Paralabidochromis Chromogynos "Zue Island" They are Lake Victoria species!!! Cool thing with these is the females have the blotching as well, just not the red and blue colors.

You can mix Vics but you have to be VERY careful to pick species that are very different..>For instance you would be fine mixing your Kyoga's with something like the fish in my avatar. Females and males of these are completely different. Just make sure you have proper ratios. I was told this by one of the best Vic people in the country, so I trust what he says.

mike my kyogas are alone ..not mixed the mbunas who are mixed i do not want to breed... bre what other species would you say i could put with kyogas down the road? Pundamilia nyererei? crimson tide? i'm not planning it now but i if i put these kyogas in my 90 i'd want to mix em with something else

I wouldn't mix Pundamilla species with the Kyoga's because the Pundamilla are too aggressive for them. You could definitely do the Paralabidochromis Chromogynos (fish in my avatar) The things you have to look for is finding a species where the females are totally different. You are not going to have a lot of options as the Kyoga females look pretty much like all other females. If you don't want to breed and don't plan on saving fry you could mix quite a few different choices. I would still stay away from Pundamilla though.
