When I was 20, I was thrown from a vehicle at around 65 mph. I was test driving my modified '65 karmann-ghia (which had no seat belts). I was driving a twisty section of road w/ way too much gas. I let off the gas when I realized that I was going too fast, which resulted in trailing throttle oversteer. I tried to correct by counter-steering, but the vehicle ended up sliding off the road. There was a raised asphalt curb/edge that caused the rear driver side swing axle to buckle and the car to flip. At that point, the driver's side door swung open due to a worn striker plate. I was thrown into a roadside ditch next to a barbed wire fence while my car flew over me, landing about 50 feet past me, down the hill and towards the creek. The car actually cartwheeled, smashing all four fenders, but leaving the passenger compartment unharmed. The car was still running when it landed. In a moment of almost "slow motion" lucidity, I remember thinking, "Oh @#$%!, I have to shut off that electric fuel pump!" I ran down to the car and shut off the ignition, turning off the fuel pump. By then, some residents on the other side of the rural road had heard the accident. I asked them to call my parents and tell them I was okay. An ambulance, fire truck, and tow truck ended up showing up. I was unharmed except for some scratches from the barbed wire fence.
