Healing open wounds

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Did the gravel ever get vacuum, cause you mentioned that your dad over feeding the other fish, maybe bacteria formed in between the gravel.

hmm. That's an idea too. I know he did gravel vac on occasion. And I know I did. The good news is that the gravel is gone! However, maybe I should empty it completely....do a deep clean of everything, the tank, lids, lights, filters, etc, re-seal it, bleach it. Start over new. before I put anything in it again. It's just been running with water in it and the decorations. So now would be a good time lol. Maybe I just want another project so I can focus on fish stuff instead of doing homework.

Polyaddict86 Polyaddict86 , good read, thanks for sharing.

I think we all agree it is a bacterial issue.... problem is what bacteria is it...
The only reason that made me share what happened to me is because all the normal antibiotics have been used to no avail which is what I went through for months
Normal testing will not show TB, neither will swabs... I had dozens of swabs done and even the liquid comming out the ulcers tested
Only when I was booked into the Medical Faculty at Wits University and actual biopsies done from pieces of flesh did it come back as microbacterial TB which had specialists dumbfoundedl

If it is a microbacteria of the TB group it will not respond to any of the antibiotics normaly used. You have to look at antibiotics like
  • isoniazid (INH)
  • rifampin (RIF)
  • ethambutol (EMB)
  • pyrazinamide
and not sure how they could be administered to fish.
Treatment takes 9 months.

They believe it was brought in by the drift wood i had put in the tank 3 or 4 months prior which I subsequently removed and discarded
So...... it was just a thought .....

I dont know how easy it would be to take a biopsy of the poly to send for testing...

Maybe I am way off track here... as I said I am no expert just the whole story hit home so I thought i would share
If it is not the case in this instance.... its good to know anyway

Thank you for sharing. That sucks and is scary that you were in that situation! So glad to hear that you didn't lose your leg. :]

I've heard about TB being really difficult to cure in fish. If was TB, would that cause a sooner fish death? He's been dealing with this for 2 months not. However, I'm not sure. Thanks for your input! It definitely could be a possibility!

Thanks... Trust me I am glad too.. its been a long road but end of this month my 9 months of treatment is finnaly up
I dont know if it would cause a sooner death, I guess eventually it could but its a subcutaneous thing. The ulcers spread in the skin and apart from that, extremely swollen leg and fever I felt fine and that went on for about 7 months
So I suppose that if it does start spreading a lot it could be a problem but for now I think there is still time to treat it

I dont know about in your country but we battle a little with finding veterenerians that specialize in fish and even birds
Most have mainly dedicated theselves to dogs, cats and livestock for years so if something like this happens its a challenge to them too

I hope your babay comes right...

Uv would help clear out the free floating bacteria. If there are bacteria in the wounds then it'll be staying in there and festering.

Still would help. Could've prevented it. The water quality was a factor as well. Clean water and maintenance will do the same as well.

Taking the skin sampling would help. Tell what it is and isn't. But there's some good potential since it got better with the sulfa.

Kanaplex has been advised and will see.

The other issue is not sure of what the cost would be to have a vet or fish vet specifically look at a sick fish.

Not to say fish have no value but would it cost more than buying a new ornate if it was to die anyway. Couldn't be diagnosed properly or it was circling the drain because so much time has passed.

These things also become a factor in this.

Just a few thoughts.

what should I do to "disinfect" the main tank? I'd like to put fish in there again. Is there anything I can do besides UV sterilizer. I don't have $200 to spend on one right now.

Will keep the ornate in QT and proceed with the triple sulfa, kanaplex(buying tomorrow), and daily betadine swab.

Others can probably advise on sterilization but when i was dealing with the callumanus worms i soaled everyrhing ina bleach amd water solution then soaked again in prime to dechlotinate

Ake sure not to cross contaminate the main tank. What ever you use on the qt is ONLY used on the qt...water change hoses nets and so on

I dont know if they have to stay qt equipment forever but atleadt for the time being. Save yourself money and just buy garden hoses. They drain faster than python are cheaper and can be hooked up to that python adapter to the sink.
