Healing open wounds

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Looked like it's healing. The mention of another wound on the other thread is worrisome.

I think the water has to be get better. The water has to be pristine. You need to test twice a day if need be. But large water changes are in order. Ammonia -0, nitrite-0, and nitrate <20. That's the goal when u check the water.

The heater has to be guarded.

Abx will kill the bacteria and ur tank is relying on water changes to keep the water pristine.

Get some iodine and get a qtip. Soak the qtip and place the qtip to the area.

Add salt to the tank.

ordered a heater guard. LFS didn't have those or floating plants. PVC pipe I got is too thick to make a DIY heater guard. Should I drill holes in it anyway and put that over the heater in the meantime? The heater I have in QT, supposably "won't burn," but better to be safe for sure.

Purchased the Betadoine/iodine. Apply it once a day? how long should I hold it on the wound?

what is abx?
how much salt? been doing 1 tbsp per 5 gallons.

Thank you for your patience with all my questions. Definitely am learning a lot from you and everyone on the forum. :)

1st and 2nd pic looks worst than before, 3rd pic looks like its healing, take a video its better so everyone can see better.
will do. Yeah it did look like it was healing, but as of yesterday it's been getting worse.

he had that as well. just was a small one across from the other one. both are from when he was in the main tank with the other heater. originally the small one was just a patch of yellow raised skin, but it opened up yesterday(the first one also did that, both started off as a red scratch, so I wasn't sure what had happened). Still trying to forgive myself for not trying to treat it sooner, but I am trying my best.

here is a picture of the back wound:

Im not health expert but is the concensus still heater burn ? Now there are two ?

I woud really try and get that ammonia down.
My ghetto qt is mainly to make sure they dont jump and have clean water with cycled media. Can be as simple as an air pump circulating water through cucled media. The filter is a cheapo that i just stuff some established media in. The tank was a qt a sump then a qt again. Lid is acrylic from home depot with holes drilled and held down with duct tape

Can't say if it's heater burn. Best best is to keep water clean, salt and iodine.

Cross fingers. See what input Charney Charney has.

there's been two, but the other one wasn't open until now, so I was more worried about the big one on his side/stomach. Post #57 December 23rd shows the small one on his back.

Your "ghetto" qt is awesome. Like the idea of the acrylic lid with holes and duct tape. How do you have your heater and bags of media hanging? I have a spare ceramic biomedia bag for my aquaclear 20.

thank you. Will do!

just swabbed him with the iodine twice. 1st try very diluted and I am not sure if I got it, so I did took him out of the tank a second time. 2nd try: dabbed wounds with dry qtip first and then betadine qtip. tried to hold the qt tip on the wounds for a few seconds. Not sure if this is a good idea or not? Hope I didn't have him out of the water too long. maybe like 60 seconds.
