IMO that is great evidence that environmental factors have nothing to do with it. I subscribe to the theory that is a genetic problem, caused by indescriminate breeding on a mass scale. If you look at the other species of aro, the only other one that seems to get DE more frequently than in freak occurrances is the asian aro, which is also heavily farm bred (but with a bit more emphasis on quality than silvers).
When I was in Singapore I saw many large silvers in big ponds, some had DE, some didn't.
I agree with T1KARMANN; if you don't like DE spend the extra coin and get a black!!

You say it's genetic that would mean the silver aro gene pool is tiny compared to black jar or lei or why don't they get it as much
In the wild silver aros would live in muddy pools no the clear water we provide in tanks
You can go round and round with the drop eye thing but you will never know the true reason
It's something in a tank environment that silvers don't take we'll to but other aros seam to be able to deal with
This could be due to the size of a silver compared to other aros and the size tanks many cram them into or the reflection from the tank glass which could be why blanking out all the sides of the tank works in some cases
Most silver keepers just dump food in making the aro take food from the bottom
In the wild a silver aro would never look down for food as the water would be murky and it wouldn't be able to see food that well this is why aros skim the surface of the water with its barbels waiting for something to drop into the water or looking for animals or insects above the water to jump for
By keeping a aro in a tank it has no need to jump for food it also has a clear view all over the tank as the water is clear so it's eye focus on different things meaning its eye will change direction
You can't just blame it on genetics as that's the easy way out

Never had a aro with hole in the head in the 25 years I have been keeping aros
Silver and a black I had for 7 years before Asians became available in the UK

Oh....So your back to just the silver owners are the ones who dump the food. How do you know it's only the silver owners doing this? And not the owners of blacks, jars, and asians?

Asian aro keepers mainly people in Asia feed feeders super worms or crickets so they are less likely to dump food on the tank base for the aro to go down for
Most silver keepers feed prawn mussel or other frozen foods so not as many silver owners feed solely insects
A silver would prob get drop eye even if you didn't dump food on the floor read everything be for jumping not just the bits you feed is a dig at silver owners
I think it's something in a tank environment silvers do adjust to as well as other aros
